MESTALLA became
Dynamic Syndications 138th Individual Winner, our 368th Race Win and our 42nd win for this season when he trotted to the line to score in race 4 at Ballina on Tuesday 22/7/2014.
MESTALLA wins a Class 1 race over 1600m as a Maiden
Previously with the Chris Waller Stables at Rosehill,
MESTALLA was sent to
Matthew Dunn who trains at
Murwillumbah, with the view of racing in Brisbane in Saturday class. The belief was the horse would be better suited to Queensland but still as a Maiden and as a 3yo, he still had a
BOBS Bonus available to him in NSW up until the 31st July.
After two handy runs back from a spell at Newcastle, Team Dynamic felt that the time was right to head north. We had identified this event, a Class 1 and Maiden Plate Set Weights over 1600m as a race where
MESTALLA would be very well treated at the weights.
We moved
MESTALLA up to
Matty Dunn’s stables and together, hatched the plan to win this event.
We booked gun Brisbane jockey
Ryan Wiggins to ride
MESTALLA and the plan was set however our hearts sunk when we copped barrier 14 of 18. We were still confident but
Ryan Wiggins would have to put in a super ride to get the job done and that’s exactly what Ryan did.
The race was a lot stronger than we had anticipated. We were one of only two maiden’s in the big field, as all other runners were winners and many were in good form.
However we remained confident that with average luck, despite the tough draw we could win.
Normally we would have waited for another race but we wanted to pick up the
$5,000 BOBS Bonus.
Jumping away well, Ryan pressed forward from his wide gate for the first furlong and then looked to get across. By the time they had gone 300m, Ryan had
Mestalla perfectly placed one out / two pairs back with cover. It was a magical bit of horsemanship.
Mestalla came back underneath him and for the next 800m
Mestalla travelled well. At the 500m the leaders were struggling and Ryan grasped his opportunity and peeled out 3 deep and went straight to the front at the 400m.
Ryan then made a staying test out of the race. From the 400m he took off and stretched his advantage to a couple of lengths lead and had the big field off the bit and struggling as the field swung for home. Ryan pushed the go button and
Mestalla went 3 lengths in front and the race was all over.
A quick look over his shoulder at that 150m point, Ryan saw
Mestalla was safely in front so he sat up in the saddle and allowed
Mestalla to coast unextended to the line under his own steam, leaving plenty of petrol in the tank for next time.
Eased down on the line 3 lengths in front doing it easy
MESTALLA and Ryan Wiggins return to scale
This was
Mestalla’s 5th race start and he recorded a strong and determined win at 1600m.
His record now reads:
5 starts: 1 Win, 1 second, 0 thirds, 1 fourth.
Trainer - Matthew Dunn Jockey - Ryan Wiggins
Importantly for his new trainer
Matty Dunn, it was his
100th winner in the Northern Rivers District this racing season and pushes him up to
equal first in the local premiership. This is a terrific feat considering he races so many of his horses in Queensland where he currently sits
third on the
Brisbane Trainers Premiership.
Purchased at the
Magic Millions Sale from leading Queensland Breeders
Lyndhurst Stud Farm for $77,500,
As a yearling
MESTALLA is a 3yo Bay Gelding by
NORTHERN METEOR x VILLA VALENCIA.
MESTALLA has always showed huge potential from the day he was broken-in. In his early pre-training we believed he had the class to measure up to top level racing. So instead of syndicating the horse, we elected to send him to NZ for their Ready To Run Sale, this way showing buyers how good his action was and how well he could sprint. Offered for Sale in NZ, the reserve price was not met but the task had been achieved. Prospective owners could see that they were buying a horse capable of winning. We returned
Mestalla to Sydney and syndicated him in a very quick time.
He had a few setbacks in his first preparation at Rosehill and was returned to the paddock after two starts.
Following a spell, the horse has returned this time in and shown the promise we believed he always had. He was unlucky when 1 length behind the Peter Snowden trained NO DELAY first up 1400m at Newcastle and then, was luckless again at Newcastle second up when the rider was held up and got too far back when finishing fourth behind Off The Bench over 1500m.
Now with the Maiden out of the way and a win at 1600m,
Mestalla will campaign in Brisbane where on today effort, he should give his team of owners some exciting times ahead.
So, what’s in a Name ?
MESTALLA is from the broodmare Villa Valencia. Villa means house and Valencia is a region in Spain. Their main sport in the region is football (soccer) where the home team is a highly credentials professional side. The main building in Valencia is the home stadium for their football team. It’s named
MESTALLA Stadium. Hence
MESTALLA is named after the main home in Valencia.
