When the barrier draws came out earlier in the week our immediate response was to be despondent based on the car park draw. However with the realisation we were in Race 10 on a 11 race programme and the prospect of running on a Heavy track, we began to smile acknowledging the track would be badly affected by race 10 and the field would be scouting wide, therefore our wide draw was not such a handicap.
The day panned out accordingly and the surface deteriorated throughout the afternoon.
Peter Moody wanted Ben Melham to race the horse where comfortable and under a hold, back in the early stages, with cover from the wide draw but as they started turning for home, heading out wide towards the outside fence.
MAGNILOQUENT in control with 50 metres to run
Ben Melham rode the horse a treat and the plan came off to perfection and our owners received a city win.
MAGNILOQUENT was well away but then restrained by Ben to allow him to get into a rhythm dropping back to 4th last in the big field after a furlong. Heading up to the top turn and down the side, MAGNILOQUENT was patiently ridden and some dozen lengths off the leaders as they turned for home.
Ben Melham then steered out to just a couple off the outside fence giving the leaders a big start. However the horse was balanced and chimed in quickly that by the 200m mark he had hit the lead. In a slogging go to the post MAGNILOQUENT dug deep and held off the challenge of a determined runner-up.
MAGNILOQUENT as a Yearling
This was a genuine team effort. The Moody Stable have the Best Captain / Coach in Peter at the helm, but it’s a credit to the big team of support staff and their attention to detail that makes these wins possible. Add in the skill set of talented jockey Ben Melham who is riding with great confidence, it’s a huge head start.
Finally we would like to acknowledge all owners that have
lived a dream today:
