Melbourne Premier Sale - A Dynamic Review

Not since the Melbourne Premier Class of 2008, which included Black Caviar, Reward for Effort and Starspangledbanner, has the Premier cracked the $80,000 average mark, but record demand across the first three days helped to push all major indicators north again.


Of the 441 yearlings to have been sold, they averaged $84,115 (a 10 per cent increase on last year’s $76,302) while the clearance rate hit 81% which is also up 5 per cent.

The median has highlighted the strong middle market of the sale, rising by an impressive 17 per cent to $70,000 on 2013's figure of $60,000.

Significantly the sale was extremely well supported by the Asian market and in particular those from Singapore and Malaysia. This buying bench was missing from the first major sale of the year but arrived in force and drove the prices upwards here at Melbourne.

Dynamic Syndications came to the sale committed to adding nice horses to our 2014 stables should they present themselves however as we already had secured 11 yearlings earlier in the year, we were specifically only interested in buying quality horses from terrific pedigrees from household name sires. Aware that the Easter yearling sale is only weeks away, unless these horses were spectacular, we simply were not interested.

Again the old adage rings true "the harder you work the luckier you get".
 
We inspected 161 yearlings in total at the sale grounds. These were the yearlings that had met our stringent buying criteria on the strength of their genetic pedigree. Over several days of assessments, we reduced that list to a 26 candidates for inspection by our veterinarian, Dr John Walker.

Our vet further reduced this list by another four (4) to be left with a final short list of 22 yearlings to have an X-ray inspection.

After X-rays, that was further reduced to just 17 yearlings to be considered for purchase.

By the end of the sale we had achieved our goal and added 4 of the Best Quality Yearlings available at the sale from our short list of 17 and these 4 were all purchased at value prices. We paid $80,000, $75,000, $60,000 and $45,000 for an average price of $65,000 + GST again proving with hard work success follows.

Naturally each yearling had a sensational pedigree both commercially and genetically. They also survived 3 rounds of physical inspections including a full veterinary examination and also passed an x-ray inspection.

Lot 4 REDOUTE’S CHOICE x ZAPURPLE Colt



On Day 1 of the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale, our countless hours of due diligence procedures paid handsome dividends, when we struck early for what we considered was one of the standout colts in the sale.

We secured a wonderful colt by Australia's undisputed King of Sires REDOUTE'S CHOICE from the mare ZAPURPLE a Gr3 winning daughter over 2500m by the Champion Sire ZABEEL. She also ran 3rd in a Gr2 and 4th in the Gr1 Oaks.

Our colt was her second foal. Her first is a 2yo colt also by Redoute's Choice which sold for $175,000 at the 2013 Easter Sale to Swettenham Stud. ZAPURPLE is a 3/4 sister to Champion Singapore colt FLYING FULTON - 13 wins up to 1900m including 6 wins at stakes level.

ZAPURPLE is a daughter of stakes winning mare PURPLE GROOVE, a Winner of 6 races also 3 times stakes placed and twice 4th at Gr1 level. PURPLE GROOVE is a 1/2 sister to the dam of stakes winners TAIKUN, SUPER GROOVE and SP Boogaloo.
 
PURPLE GROOVE is a daughter of Gr3 winner and stakes placed IRISES who also ran 4th in the Gr1 Blue Diamond.

This is such a strong pedigree with an A +++ pedigree rating and a Best Of Sale Rating Score of 1.5 which placed him in our evaluation scores into the Top 3 colts at the sale.
 
We did not consider we could be lucky enough to buy him as we rated the value of this yearling significantly higher that the purchase price we secured him for.

However in our opinion he suffered 2 disadvantages. Firstly he was offered for sale in the first 30 minutes which is a bad time for vendors as the market has not established any rhythm or consistency. The second reason is that VOBIS horses are highly regarded in the state of Victoria and those not registered for VOBIS suffer in popularity. We had done our homework and knew that despite the pedigree page not saying the colt was eligible, in actual fact, he is  eligible and only needs to be paid up for the scheme, which we intend to do.

Being passed on physical inspection and X-ray by our veterinarian, along with having a wonderful pedigree which sees him having directly descended from 3 stakes winners in a row and having a superb A+++ pedigree score and a Best Of Sale Score of 1.5 which ranks him in the top 3 colts in the catalogue, all points suggest an exceptional chance of racetrack success.

Further highlighted by the fact their have been 13 stakes winners to date whilst the DANEHILL over ZABEEL cross has produced 54 Stakes Winners. We were delighted to have purchased him for just $80,000 + GST.


Lot 243 HIGH CHAPARRAL x QUEEN’S SUITE Colt



Day 2 of the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale we added our second yearling purchase increasing our overall tally to a baker's dozen (13) of the highest quality thoroughbred yearlings available for syndication in 2014.

We purchased Lot 243 which was offered in the select "Blue Riband" section of the sale catalogue. He was a superb colt and was just $75,000 + GST.

Apart from being an absolute sensational type in conformation, size and scope, he also passed a full veterinary inspection (including X-rays) by our contracted veterinarian Dr. John Walker.

QUEEN'S SUITE is a daughter of LA MAISON (she’s our colt's Grand-dam).

LA MAISON won 2 races in Sydney and is a blood-sister to the dam of Stakes Winner BORDER TIME, 1/2 sister to Stakes Winner YOUNG BLOOD and a 1/2 sister to the dam of Stakes Winner AVULSION.

LA MAISON has been a wonderfully successful broodmare. She produced 14 foals, all raced, 12 Winners including the Gr2 Winning and Gr1 Placed REGAL CHAMBER.

A successful racehorse in her own right, REGAL CHAMBER has produced Gr1 Winner REGAL CHEER and now REGAL CHEER is the dam of the latest Stakes Winning addition to this pedigree in KNOYDART – a recent LR Winner (twice) and Gr1 placed.

Apart from boasting such a wonderfully successful pedigree full of high quality Stakes Class horses, the genetics of this cross are also simply outstanding.

To date there has been 5 Stakes Winners bred on this HIGH CHAPARRAL - SIR TRISTRAM cross including arguably his Best Son IT'S A DUNDEEL along with FAIRY OAK, HIDDEN ASSET, SHOW THE WORLD and VAQUERA.

Whilst the SADLER'S WELLS (sire of HIGH CHAPARRAL) over SIR TRISTRAM (sire of MARAUDING) cross has produced 24 Stakes Winners to date including other Gr1 Winners PERLIN, SCENIC SHOT as well as ABBADENA, COUP ENTERPRISE, ELATHEA, FULMONTI, GALIZANI, JUSTINE COUP, MAJESTICAL, MALGARA MISS, MAREA ALTA, MONTAHLIA, SAIN KHAPITAL, SPACECRAFT, SPIRIT OF TARA, SUNDAY GOLD, THE MEISTA, VISUAL DISPLAYS and WELLBEING.

It’s statistical fact, this cross is highly successful and is considered an A +++ mating. Also the yearling was ranked in the Best of Sale Rating Score - placing him in the top echelon of this Melbourne Premier catalogue.

So with such a wonderful pedigree both commercially and genetically, matching a sensational type on conformation, size and scope and then, being fully passed physically by our veterinarian with the corresponding approval of the X-rays, this colt was a highly desirable purchase for Team Dynamic, so we made him a high priority to obtain prior to the commencement of the sale.

We considered this colt to be the best by the sire HIGH CHAPARRAL at the Sale and our vet Dr. John Walker and our independent bloodstock advisor Gary Mudgway both wholeheartedly agreed with our assessment.

We had valued the colt well over $100,000 mark, so to secure him for only $75,000 + GST makes him a fantastic addition to our team and a horse we will be proud to offer for sale in the coming weeks.

Having now secured 2 wonderful colts, we thought that this may conclude our buying at the Melbourne Sale however we monitored Day 3 where 2 yearling fillies we had identified represented great buying and we swooped.


Lot 476 I AM INVINCIBLE x PREDESTINED Filly


The stats on the first season sires premiership reveal that I AM INVINCIBLE is living up to his name bouncing out of the gates with 8 individual winners to date – 5 clear of his nearest rival Denman.

Included amongst these 8 winners are 2 Stakes Winners, 2 Stakes Placed as well as the highly promising city winner Tetsuko.

In fact he leads the way in all areas of comparison: $ Earnings, Winners, Wins, Stakes Winners, Stakes Wins.

The Team at Dynamic have been looking to add an I AM INVINCIBLE yearling to our books since the start of the year however the ones we have liked have sold significantly over their true market values therefore we refused to chase them in the sale ring.

However that all changed on Day 3 at the Sale when a yearling filly by the sire offered as lot 476 went through the ring and was purchased by Dynamic Syndications for the outstanding buying price of $60,000 + GST.

She was a terrific type, athletic with excellent conformation. She was offered for sale by one of the leading Victorian based studs - MUSK CREEK Farm.

Our filly is a daughter of PREDESTINED (by Kings Best). She was a quality racehorse who won 4 city races from 1000m to 1200m and over $100,000 in prizemoney.

This filly is the second foal of this mare whilst the first foal is currently unraced.

PREDESTINED comes from a quality black type pedigree. She is a half sister to 2yo Stakes Winner BIG CHILL and multiple Stakes Winner UTAH SAINT. Our filly’s grand-dam (2nd dam) is the stakes placed HARD RIDER.

Our filly’s 3rd Dam is the Stakes Placed MRS CLANCY.

Here the pedigree has received a significant update where HARD RIDER’S half sister has produced ALL YOU WISH who is the Champion Griffin in HK in 2012-13 and has recently ran 3rd HKJC Chinese Club Challenge Cup HK-3 and 4th Hong Kong Classic Mile HK-1.

MRS CLANCY is a half-sister to Stakes Placed HAMISH and she is a half-sister to the dams of Group 1 Winners HELLO DOLLY and ART SUCCESS.

Genetically this pedigree is also very well balanced rating a score of A+ 679% and a Best Of Sale Rating Score.

This filly has everything going for her on type and pedigree and was passed by our contracted veterinarian Dr. John Walker as a horse we should buy. She looked a 2yo type that can get up and go early and her x-rays were passed with without any problems.

The sire can’t do anymore than he is right now and he leads the way of the first season sires. The female family is terrific and certainly capable of producing high quality racing progeny.

Lot 501 ARTIE SCHILLER x REDANCE



Artie Schiller is a extremely successful stallion. His statistics are very impressive:

We purchased a spectacular looking filly with a strong genetic pedigree having a score of A 171 %.

This filly was from a successful racemare REDANCE by Redoute’s Choice. A winner of 4 races including 2 city race wins. Redoute’s Choice as a broodmare sire is doing a fabulous job and is currently well inside the Top 10 Broodmare Sires. REDANCE has had 2 foals to race for 1 winner and 1 placed.

Our filly’s 2nd Dam is the Stakes Placed LITTLE GIRL DANCE. She produced the stakes placed DANCEABEEL who in turn has produce 2 Stakes Winners ISHIABEEL and VIDEO STAR while another half sister to Danceabeel named HIP HOP was stakes placed and produced Stakes Winner TRAMUNTATA.

Bred to be a serious racing prospect she was a terrific type that was also passed by our veterinarian both on physical inspection and then she passed x-ray evaluation.

We liked this filly and our Newcastle based trainer DARREN SMITH was equally taken with her. We had anticipated that she was going to be expensive on type and pedigree and the progeny of Artie Schiller has been in high demand throughout the sale. However we were in the right place at the right time. Thinking she was a 6 figure filly we were thrilled to buy her for Darren Smith to train at only $45,000. She was a sale ring steal and offers huge upside.
