There is less than a handful of the top class USA sires who enjoy actual ongoing success as a sire in Australia.
Medaglia d'Oro
One of these is
Darley Stud's Medaglia d'Oro (USA) and he made news again in the US on Monday 4th September when siring his
fifth (5th) Group 1 winner of the year and his 19th Individual Gr1 Winner.
At Del Mar (California),
boom 2YO colt Bolt d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro-Globe Trot, by A.P. Indy) made his stakes class debut at just his second career start and it was a winning one maintaining his unblemished record of now 2 starts = 2 wins.
Bolt d'Oro
Bolt d’Oro had to overcome
interference at the start and then a
“six-deep” run in transit to win the US$300,000
Gr1 Del Mar Futurity over 7 furlongs (1400), for 2YO's by three-quarters of a length.
Allowed to settle near the rear of the field in the early stages of the race, the two-year-old commenced a very wide move into the top turn, working double time but closing on the leaders.
As the field hit the top of the straight,
Bolt d'Oro despite his hard work was up to challenge. He battled with eventual runner-up
Zatter over the final furlong before pulling away over the concluding stages for a three-quarter victory.
Bolt d'Oro was purchased by his owner-trainer for
$630,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling Sale.
Medaglia d'Oro
Darley Stud’s “Super Sire” Medaglia d'Oro, now has 641 Winners; 105 Stakes Winners; 61 Stakes Placegetters and most importantly, he has sired 19 Individual Group 1 Winners.
That’s a brilliantly high 25.9% Black Type Earners : Winners ratio.
So in simple terms, if you own a
Medaglia d’Oro horse that wins a race – it has a
one in four chance of going on to be a
Stakes Class horse.
Bolt d'Oro will now be aimed toward the Gr1 Frontrunner Stakes on September 30 and then head to the Gr1 Breeders' Cup Juvenile in early November.
Bolt d'Oro became Medaglia d’Oro’s fifth individual Group 1 winner of the year in the USA which makes him the Leading USA based sire of Gr1 Winners.
Bolt d’Oro joins recently retired
two times Eclipse Champion and Nine times Group 1 Winner SONGBIRD along with
Dickinson, New Money Honey and Elate.
A proven sire of Group 1 winners in Australia with Golden Slipper Winner Vancouver and Golden Rose Winner Astern, Medaglia d'Oro will stand the 2017 breeding season at Darley Stud’s Hunter Valley operation for a service fee of $110,000.
His yearlings in 2017 sold for up to
$2.4 million in Australia highlighting the keen commercial demand for his progeny world-wide.
