At the Inglis Sales in Melbourne
our second purchase was one of the specific horses we came to Melbourne to purchase.
Whilst many participants concentrate on winning 2yo speed races
we concentrate on buying young horses to aim at the high profile Classic Races such as the Guineas, Derbies, Cups and a Plate.
We targeted Lot 115 as soon as we pulled him out of the box for inspection. He matched his magnificent pedigree page and we were determined to buy him.
He has a Melbourne Cup pedigree like no other ever before him with a champion trainer whose trained the winner of the 2013 Melbourne Cup !

Daisy Hill (vendor of the Colt we purchased) had 3 of his youngsters feature in the Blue Riband Session with Lot 115, the obvious pedigree standout. A near black colt from Paris Tryst, an unraced half-sister to Group 2 winners Outback Joe and Ustinov from the Australian Horse of the Year, LET'S ELOPE - herself a Melbourne Cup Winner.
After a bidding duel with several groups it got down to a bidding war between Dynamic Syndications buying the Colt to race in Australia and a team of Asian buyers wanting to take the Colt overseas. We had valued the Colt between $150,000 - $160,000 so we still had some ammunition when the war was won to our bid of $130,000 + GST.
ABOUT THE SIRE
AMERICAIN waved good-bye to his rivals in the 2010 Melbourne Cup
Americain is an American-bred French trained thoroughbred racehorse. The six-year-old stayer won the 150th Melbourne Cup in 2010, ridden by Gérald Mossé, trained by Alain De Royer-Dupre and owned by Melbourne businessmen Gerry Ryan and Kevin Bamford.
Americain was purchased in February 2010 by Ryan and Bamford after his 2009 season included a Group 2 win in France and a failed campaign in the United States. He headed into the Melbourne Cup with four consecutive wins, including the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay at his last start in France before heading to Australia, and the Group 3 Geelong Cup at his first Australian start. He won the Melbourne Cup by 2 1⁄2 lengths, beating Maluckyday into second and champion Australian and short-priced favourite So You Think into third. He was the first French-trained horse to win the Melbourne Cup.
Americain
Americain followed up his Melbourne Cup win by running third in the Hong Kong Vase. Returning in 2011, his four runs in France in preparation for his
Melbourne Cup defence yielded only one win. However, on return to Australia, he won the Moonee Valley Cup, which made him favourite for the Melbourne Cup despite his 58 kg topweight. He ran fourth in the 2011 Melbourne Cup.
At Stud
In 2013, leading Victorian nursery Swettenham Stud took a bold decision to add Melbourne Cup hero Americain (USA) to their stallion roster and three years on the globe-trotting Group I winner with the movie star looks is the most represented first season sire at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale.
A supremely talented stayer by one of the world’s best sires in Dynaformer, Americain was warmly greeted by Victorian breeders covering 155 mares in his debut season. Impressive first foals have grown into eye-catching yearlings and with 26 of his best youngsters accepted into Victoria’s flagship yearling sale it’s obvious what the auction house thinks of Americain.
Now it’s time for the buyers to judge!
Daisy Hill Breeding and Investments presented a draft of nine Americain yearlings offered across Premier I, the Blue Riband and Session II.
All of them are from mares hand-picked for Americain who came to Australia as a Melbourne Cup prospect.
Our Colt is the MOST EXPENSIVE by the sire and you can see why ! He's a sensational individual !
