ROB HEATHCOTE trains his First Winner for Dynamic Syndications and our OWNERS as DEFINE wins the K&R PLUMBING SUPPLIES NOVELLI - Class 5 Handicap 1350m.
Only a matter of just a few weeks ago
Dynamic Syndications and Rob Heathcote joined forces and our first horse offered to
ROB to train was our lovely mare
DEFINE (by LONHRO x FINE SOCIETY).
Define had some issues and the big weights and competitive nature of Sydney racing was such that our mare was always there about’s but unable to convert.
A calculated move north to Brisbane was floated to our top team of owners and the mare was on the truck to Rob Heathcote to see if he could weave his magic.
She arrived in excellent order and Rob was pleased with her condition and trackwork was first class.
We sent Define to the races first up in a strong List Race at Doomben where she was beaten 5.3 lengths over the 1200m trip. This was a nice effort since the mare was looking for further and in hindsight in need of match fitness.
A review of the upcoming options determined that on
Wednesday 9th December at Ipswich, there was a Class 5, 1350m Handicap event. Under the weight scale she was in very well as a high benchmark Class 2 horse carrying 56.5kgs and we grabbed the
very promising young apprentice Matthew McGillvray who claims 2.0kgs, ensuring we only carried 0.5kgs over the limit.
The stable were extremely confident that
DEFINE would run well however the only nagging doubt was that Ipswich has a wicked bias towards leaders and with the rail out 10 metres for this meeting, it was a fear that we would be unable to reel in the leaders.
That fear should never have been contemplated as the magnificent mare recaptured her old form and gave the opposition an 8 length head start at the 850m, circled the field 3- 5 wide and ran away, to be eased down to win by a soft and widening 2.8 lengths over the stablemate Neuschwanstein with a further 1.5 lengths back to Voltare Lumiere in third position.
They ran a slick 1:19.00 and home in a sizzling 34.83 for the last 600m, so it’s obvious that with the extra work
DEFINE did in the run, our mare easily broke 34.00 secs for her final 600m.
During the call
race commentator Alan Thomas said: “Here’s Define rushing up 3 deep on the point of the corner …. And as they come around the turn, 300 metres to go, Define out in the middle of the track has hurtled to the lead here …….. but its Define clear inside the 200 metre mark leads by 2 or 3 …. But they’ve got no hope with this, it will bolt in Define, it won by oh, three and a half from Neuschwanstein …… Gee it did give them a nice touch up Define.”
“and he’ll get the quinella Robert because Neuschwanstein has run second, that’s another one of his.”
Robert Heathcote was interviewed post-race.
Bernadette Cooper started by saying “She was in a race of her own”
Robert replied: “She was and the fact she’s run 34.8 the last 600m and she’s probably the only one that’s come from back in the field all day but to be honest Bernie, I think she had a bit on them class wise, where she’s been racing and talking with the troops (Dynamic) down in Sydney, it was just a matter of boosting her confidence, it was getting her confidence back up again, her work at home has been bloody enormous and whilst she has great second up form, more importantly we just needed to get her confidence up, the owners confidence up, the trainers confidence up and it’s been good for everybody.”
“Matty just gave her a treat of a ride and I think he will say when he comes in, she was travelling pretty good at the 600m.”
“I’ll also let you deal with the fact that we also ran second and my wife owns most of that so, she will be pissed off with the trainer for knocking her off !”
"We’re very happy !”
Jockey Matthew McGillvray said:
“She jumped really well, a bit too well really, I didn’t snag her back but she was a bit slow to muster speed so I just let her find her feet and be comfortable and I just slotted her one off the fence and she just told me, she let me know, when she wanted to go so I just peeled her out and she done it all, it was good.”
“She towed me into the race, she’s a lovely horse, she’s beautiful, nice, big and strong, and I think she’s a lot stronger than all these horses grade wise and she went really good today.”
DEFINE has now started on 16 occasions for 3 wins and 2 placings and has taken her prizemoney up to $171,035 and being a daughter of a Group 1 winner and being Gr2 placed herself, she will be worth a pretty penny when she retires for stud duties.
