The
PETER MOODY trained
DISSIDENT claimed the first
Group 1 of the new Australian racing season with a dominant win of the
Memsie Stakes at Caulfield.
The winner of the
Randwick Guineas last season,
Dissident tracked the leaders under pilot
Ben Melham before putting the race away with an explosive turn of foot. Sweet Idea hung on to second placing after leading with Puissance De Lune taking the minor placing.
Dissident Winning the Memsie Stakes Gr1
Moody said "He's a high-class colt ... the world's his oyster,"
"That was a top-class field today and he has put them to the sword and got the job done."
"He's mixed it with the best of his age, and everyone's had a doubt on that form but he's met some good old
weight-for-age performers and he's dead-set put them to the sword,"
Moody said.
"He's worth his place in any
weight-for-age field in the country."
Peter Moody doesn’t stare at his trophy cabinet when mapping campaigns for his horses.
If he did, he would have talked up the
Cox Plate for Dissident since Saturday’s win. Peter has always maintained the horse comes before his personal agendas.
The bookmakers however thought
Dissident’s commanding
Memsie Stakes win was a super
Cox Plate trial and jockey
Ben Melham agreed.
Sportsbet immediately wound him in to $13 for
Australia’s weight-for-age championship, a race Melham believes the trip would be right up
Dissident’s alley.
“He’s got the right temperament for it (the
Cox Plate),’’ Melham said.
“He’s a relaxed horse and he switches off and comes right back underneath you but Pete makes those decisions.’’
"Not only is he (Peter) a good trainer but he's very loyal and it's great to be back riding Group 1 winners for him," said Melham, who
Moody put in charge of Black Caviar for a Group 1 win when Nolen was unavailable.
Moody was a measured figure in a mounting yard that erupted in applause and roars from a big group of owners after the 1400m Memsie.
Asked about the Cox Plate, Moody shrugged his shoulders.
He said the “world is his oyster’’ but that oyster is not the Cox Plate.
“I have strong doubts about his 2000m ability, I really do,’’
Moody said.
“He’s super at a mile I reckon.
“Can he stick on at 2000m?
"He's got to show to us that he can run a mile-and-a-quarter (2,000m)".
We might go to the
Makybe Diva (Stakes, 1600m) and go away for the autumn. If he can win that, he’s done his job.’’
Moody acknowledges and accepts he is viewed as a better autumn than spring trainer, and he has a theory.
“I’ve got a theory that Melbourne horses go better in autumn because of the
shit winter we’ve got (leading into spring).”
Dissident was one of four horses in
Moody’s Caulfield stable who wintered in the Brisbane sunshine.
“I said to (stable manager) Jeff O’Connor this morning (Saturday) that I can pick the ones who’d been spelling in Queensland. They stood out like
dogs balls.’’
Peter Moody and Dynamic Syndications believe we may have struck it rich again with the new
2yo filly by I AM INVINCIBLE ex PREDESTINED. Eligible for everything, she has been nominated for the
BLUE DIAMOND (the race Peter & Dynamic won with
REWARD FOR EFFORT) and
GOLDEN SLIPPER as well as the $5 million
Inglis Race Series.
On top of these, she is a very rare filly in the fact that she is
BOTH VOBIS GOLD and BOBS eligible.
Since we have purchased this filly, there has been
seven (7) important updates in the female pedigree page which has franked her commercial value.
Included is the fact that her sire is the most exciting stallion in Australia at present, having romped away last season with the First Season Sires Premiership recording a massive
17 individual 2yo winners including a massive five (5) Stakes Winners.
Also, Predestined a 4 time city winner, had a half-brother
HARD STRIDE win a Stakes Race recently and backed that up with another Gr3 placing on Saturday.
She is now a half Sister to
3 Stakes Winners.
