Golden Slipper winner Pierro was one of the great favourites of champion trainer Gai Waterhouse and his top-class daughter Pinot might be the one to deliver victory for Gai in one of the few major races Waterhouse has never won.
Waterhouse is one step closer to fulfilling a lifelong ambition to win the Group 1 VRC Oaks following the dominant win of Pinot in the Group 3 MRC Ethereal Stakes (2000m) at Caulfield on Saturday.
PINOT
A last start winner of the Kennedy Oaks Trial at Flemington over 1800 metres, Pinot relished a further step out to 2000 metres for this assignment, leading throughout and cruising home to win by nearly two lengths.
She is now second favourite for the VRC Oaks behind Group 1 MRC Thousand Guineas winner Aloisia.
Waterhouse, who trains Pinot in partnership with Adrian Bott, said Pinot had been sent to her Flemington stable specifically for the fillies classic
"When she came down from Sydney six weeks ago I was determined to win the VRC Oaks, it's the one thing I want to do," Waterhouse said.
"I sent a couple of fillies down and Pinot was beaten at her first start but ever since she's kept on improving.
"She will improve for this run today too as she was a couple of weeks between races."
Pinot has two wins and two seconds from five starts and prizemoney of $128,275.
A $200,000 Inglis Easter purchase from the
Coolmore draft, she is certainly bred to win an Oaks being a half-sister to stakes-winner Dizlago and Group 2 placed Lucky Lago from Group 1 AJC Australian Oaks winner Dizelle, a full sister to HK Horse of the Year Vengeance of Rain.
Foaled and raised at Coolmore, Pinot has a 2 x 4 cross of champion sire Zabeel, so the 2500 metres of the Group 1 VRC Oaks should hold no fears.
She is the third stakes-winner for Pierro. She joins other fillies
TULIP and
SATIN SLIPPER.
Also on Saturday, Pierro sired a smart winner at Bendigo with
Plato a $1.5 million colt scoring over 1600 metres. The half-brother to Golden Slipper winner Vancouver won by a length and a quarter at his fourth start.
Pierro also scored in Perth where
Arcadia Prince a promising three year-old made it two wins from three starts when scoring over 1400 metres at Ascot.
Pierro this season has produced 9 individual winners of 12 race wins including 2 Stakes Winners and $844,910 in prizemoney.
Pierro is Australia’s leading second crop sire by Earnings.

On Saturday 14/10 at Caulfield, there was
a significant and very timely Black-Type pedigree update for our PIERRO / SPECIAL EPISODE 2yo Filly, who is being polished by
legendary Caulfield Trainer MICK PRICE.
Our PIERRO x SPECIAL EPISODE Filly in pre-training
The pedigree of our filly has received
five commercially significant additions since we purchased her in January. They are:
1) PIERRO was crowned CHAMPION FIRST SEASON SIRE.
2) ASTRO FLAME the half-brother to our filly has won again and is now Stakes-Placed.
3) FIRST SEAL was awarded CHAMPION FEMALE SPRINTER title.
4) FIRST SEAL added a Gr2 placing in the MVRC Sunline Stakes.
5) SACRED SWORD added a Stakes Placing on debut at Caulfield.
We highlight on the pedigree page below, the additions to the family which were not seen on the catalogue page at the yearling sales, but
continue the upward commercial spiral of this family.
Mick Price - He will be training our filly
Mick Price had another Top Season in 2016/17 with 105 Winners including 9 Stakes Wins – 3 at Gr1 level and earnings over $5.8 million.
Mick has started the 2017/18 season in the same fashion with 25 winners already and earnings over $2.1 million.
Our filly’s 3yo elder half-sister
TELEPLAY (Written Tycoon x Special Episode) is also trained by Mick Price and continues to impress everyone. She will be at the trials in the next couple of weeks.
Mick Price is adamant that Teleplay is a serious racehorse and believes she is also black-type bound which is not surprising based on the wonderful success of the family, the ability of her sire and the skills of her trainer.
Imagine the commercial windfall that awaits the owners of our PIERRO x SPECIAL EPISODE Filly should TELEPLAY live up to expectations and SACRED SWORD progress adding further black-type.
