It takes a racehorse with
well above average ability to
win any 2yo race on debut, especially at
Randwick and even moreso, when drawn off the track and then,
“shock-horror” missing the start as the barriers crash back.
In a blink, the field had dashed 100 metres, yet this subject horse is now leading on the fence, having crossed the field with his brilliant speed.
Then for the next 600m the horse is held tightly on the bit, as he enjoys his time racing for fun, with his
ears pricked and looking about like it’s a
big game, before turning for home and then, passing the 300m, the
jet pilot releases the brakes and
whoosh, in a twinkling the horse
dashes away before being eased down over the final 50 metres to record
a massive 3.41 length win over a field of highly promising peers.
Dynamic Syndications outstanding 2yo gelding BAROQUE ROAD (Caravaggio x Malibu Road) was scintillating when facing the starter for the first time and left nothing to chance when a
dominant winner of Race 1 at Randwick’s Kensington Track on Wednesday afternoon, claiming the TAB Handicap, a 2yo Maiden over 1100m.
Expertly trained by Adrian Bott and Gai Waterhouse, BAROQUE ROAD was a $100,000 Magic Millions Yearling Purchase for Dynamic Syndications / Dean Watt Bloodstock and his co-ownership team look to have a “boom horse” on their hands.
BAROQUE ROAD as a yearling after being educated by Shane Rose at Bimbadeen Park.
Ridden to perfection by Nash Rawiller, BAROQUE ROAD wearing saddle cloth number one and lumping 58.0kgs, lived up to his
two (2) promising trial wins and owners and punters alike were delighted in his debut effort.
Nothing is ever straight forward in the racing game, and this event was no exception.
His regular track rider
Tim Clark who rode him in both trial wins, had done all the work on top of
BAROQUE ROAD and was enthusiastic to be aboard on his debut run.
Unfortunately, Tim came down late last week with illness and was only a 50/50 chance of being able to ride on Wednesday.
Team Dynamic couldn’t take the risk that we would be without a
top pilot so booked
Nash to ride.
As it panned-out, Tim was unable to fill his engagements on Wednesday and was stood down, so
the decision to book Nash was a masterstroke, as the antics of
BAROQUE ROAD through racecraft inexperience required a strong rider to control our boy and keep his mind on the job.
BAROQUE ROAD is still very green and has so much to learn in racecraft and focus, however on sheer natural ability, he has a
V8 motor under the hood.
From the day we put a saddle on his back, he has been a work in progress, but has
never left connections wondering about his ability.
It’s just been a matter of patience to keep training him to harness his talent, to allow his riders to unleash his natural force.
Nash Rawiller gave him a perfect ride, not panicking when our 2yo stepped away a half-length behind the field. Nash simply allowed him to balance and work forward and the
“Dynamic Duo” quickly forged their way to the lead and from wide on the track, came across the face of the field to land on the paint, as two of his peers who had drawn to his outside came across with him to ensure a genuine tempo.
Balanced into a rhythm,
Nash allowed BAROQUE ROAD to follow the fence until straightening as those out wider commenced their runs.
Passing the 300m mark
Nash was a half-length in front and hadn’t moved a muscle. Then he allowed our galloper a little rein and
BAROQUE ROAD responded keenly, then at the furlong maker,
Nash pushed the “go-button” and BAROQUE ROAD exploded away.
Nash pulled the persuader at the 150m and our horse found another gear, dropping his peers who were doing their best behind but simply had no answer to the domination and power of our leader.
Nash had the luxury to stop riding 50 metres from the finishing post and allow
BAROQUE ROAD to cruise home with his ears pricked, “running for fun.” He had a good look about at the big screen infield and the grandstand to the outer.
However
BAROQUE ROAD was in a superior league despite the quality of his peers.
The
Dynamic Duo eased right down to an idle over the final 25 metres, but still posted a
massive 3.41 length widening win over second favourite Oriental Tycoon (58.0kgs) with Spicy Hot Pot (54.5kgs) 0.02 length back in third place.
They stopped the clock at on a Soft 7 in the time of 1:06.64 with a last 600m in 0:36.23.
In claiming victory
BAROQUE ROAD banked prizemoney incl. BOBS Bonus of
$33,525.
There is still plenty of improvement to come so its exciting to think how far this fellow may go.
Racecaller Darren Flindell over the concluding stages said:
“BAROQUE ROAD wanting to drift about a bit but still a length and a half clear ….. Nothing making any headway and Baroque Road goes through it’s gears now, given a couple of smacks with the whip and away it goes, oh Big Win – Baroque Road.”
Sky commentator Richard Haynes said:
“The win today goes the way of Number 1 BAROQUE ROAD, he got across from the gate and was able to take up proceedings and shaken up by Nash Rawiller and this Caravaggio youngster, goes on and wins well. He responded well and was well supported and that’s why. And BAROQUE ROAD for the big Dynamic Syndications ownership get’s off to the right start.”
Co-commentator Brad Gray added: “
Yeah he just wanted to wander about there in the straight didn’t he. But Nash was strong at the finish and so was the horse, and that is the benefit of having a 2yo that can do it at both ends. He made his own luck and was really strong through the line. It was just a ‘rinse and repeat’ of what he did in his most recent barrier trials, obviously a horse with a bit of scope going forward. So Baroque Road, a pretty dominant winner in the end and I suspect it will be a race that we can follow with a bit of confidence.”
Richard Haynes then interviewed co-trainer Adrian Bott and said: “BAROQUE ROAD, he was a $100,000 Magic Millions yearling purchase and Adrian, they (owners) are on their way to recouping that with a Caravaggio gelding. You can’t do much more than that.”
Adrian Bott replied:
"Yeah most certainly, it looks at this stage a very astute purchase by Adam and Dean Watt and there is a lot of upside. Showed good natural speed up the running, obviously he is still learning, wanting to run about a bit there late, so I think there is plenty of merit about that, once he becomes a bit more seasoned and puts it all into place, I think we will see a lot more upside.
“We’ve had him through the system a few times, and in fairness he has shown well above average ability from the outset. A little bit above himself there as a young horse, which is why he has returned a gelding this time in and hasn’t looked back since we have been able to do that, and there is plenty of upside off the back of today.”
Richard Haynes added: “Lots of options for BAROQUE ROAD who wins the first race of the day, really, really nicely. Margins are up and he’s done it in style, three and a half lengths by a nose, in 1:06.64 and 36.23 the last 600m, so good win, good debut, and of course a number of horses in behind who ran excellent races.
“Just watching the replay here, he’s still a horse that’s having a fair look around, big screen – what’s that? And some new odds and TAB price graphics along the front so Munsie (TAB’s Glenn Munsie) he might be trained here but he was having a good look around at a few things and there is a fair stack of raw ability there with BAROQUE ROAD, too good in the first.”
Glenn Munsie commented: “Say that again, he had no idea where he was the last 200m of that race there Baroque Road, and even coming back when Nash just brought him back to scale there, Nash just had to give him a couple of gentle taps down the shoulder to get his mind back on the job, and walk him back to the enclosure. Have a look at him there, he’s got his ears pricked, and he’s walking back to the yard just saying ‘oh gee, is that what you have to do! Just go out there, trot around for 1100m and then I will go back, have a shower and put my mouth in the feed bin.’ $2.20 (win) and $1.50 (place) so they have not missed there, flucs $3.90 in and Starting Price $2.50, so the market got it right there.
“He is entered for both the JJ Atkins and the Sires Produce in Brisbane, so we will see if there is any plans to press on to Brisbane at this stage, but he’s going to take a stack of improvement out of that Baroque Road.”
Nash Rawiller was interviewed post-race by Sky’s Chantelle Buckley who asked:
“He never looked like being beaten, he crossed them, he stacked them up, and Nash you gave him a kick there and he was far too good. Nash that was a nice effort on debut, I assume you haven’t had much to do with him, what did you think?”
Nash replied: “He’s still raw, and typical of Dynamic horses, they are early goers but they have a lot of scope, and he’s similar to that, he’s done that on raw ability, he was slow away, took a while to find his rhythm, but once he knew what he was there for, he really let go late. He will take a good two and a half lengths improvement just off being that bit green but yeah, he’s a really nice, strong fella and he’s got a good deal of scope.”
