“A city-class horse going back in grade to the provincials and up in trip— that’s a good formula.’’ This was co-trainer Adrian Bott’s prophecy about
SAVAPINSKI (4yo mare Savabeel x Swarovski by Pins), prior to be sent out an
odds-on $1.35 favourite for the TAB.com.au Class 1 Handicap (1600m) at Wyong on Sunday and she didn’t let her owners and supporters down when
she claimed victory by 2.46 lengths.
SAVAPINSKI winning Race 1 at Wyong on Sunday
Gai Waterhouse and co-trainer Adrian Bott had Savapinski accepted for a race at the Newcastle Beaumont over 1350m meeting on Saturday which they were confident in winning as well but decided to reserve the mare for the 1600m at Wyong on Sunday.
The team believed the 1350m race was easier for Savapinski based upon fitness but the 1600m would set her on a better programming path going forward out of this race.
Either way, the stable was positive she would win and it proved to be correct.
The only pressure with short priced favourites is the weight of money and therefore expectation which causes stress levels to rise however
Savapinski and Brenton Avdulla gave supporters no cause of concern.
Savapinski had raced twice previously, for an all the way win on the Beaumont track in March but pulled up shinsore so was given a break.
She resumed this preparation over 1200m and she drew wide before finishing a close first-up fourth at Canterbury on August 16. The mare was hampered at the 400 at Canterbury and was only beaten a length. She went from 1200 to 1600 here and dominated.
Our only concern would be fitness over the concluding stages by jumping up 400m second-up, but that would only be if they went too hard early.
Brenton Avdulla knew this and
gave Savapinski a sweet ride and the mare responded.
As they jumped, Savapinski landed in second position, at the girth of Uncle Rodriguez and the pair controlled the speed with Savapinski settling beautifully. This position was maintained until the 600m where Brenton asked Savapinski to move up and eyeball the leader.
The tussle lasted just 50m before Savapinski drew clear on the point of the turn and then the Dynamic Duo dashed away putting up a 3 length break.
Brenton being conscious of the mare not being hard fit, had a peak at the big screen on the infield and saw he was well in front and in no danger so elected to coast the last 100m to the line and recorded a 2.46 length win over Uncle Rodrigues x 0.39 length margin to Yeah Bravo in third spot.
The placegetters were no pushovers. Uncle Rodrigues ($13) had run 2nd at Canterbury two starts ago beaten 0.1 length behind Hypnotist whilst third placed Yeah Bravo ($5) is a Randwick Winner and Warwick Farm placed.
SAVAPINSKI & BRENTON AVDULLA
Savapinski was facing the starter for just the third time having won at Newcastle on debut and a 4th at Canterbury when resuming.
Her form now reads 3 starts: 2 wins, 1 fourth and $35,500.
Dynamic Syndications purchased the filly at the NZ Bloodstock Yearling Sale for $70,000.
Since the purchase, the half-brother has raced. Named
Multifacets - he has won 4 races between 1550m – 2000m and has won $200,530 to date including wins at Rosehill, Warwick Farm and Canterbury
The stable believe
SAVAPINSKI has excellent upside and are confident that the owners will have ongoing success especially when the trips get out beyond 1600m.
