High class Australian bred four year-old Sun Jewellery capped a remarkable year when taking out the
Premier Cup HK Gr 3 at Sha Tin on Sunday, the last Black Type race of the season.
The talented son of
Snitzel was having his first start since finishing midfield in the Hong Kong Derby and returned to his best to charge home and win the 1400 metre feature by a short head.
Sunday’s success was the fourth win from six starts this season for Sun Jewellery and follows on from previous victories in the
Hong Kong Classic Mile HK Gr 1 and
Hong Kong Classic Cup HK Gr 1, where he defeated eventual BMW Hong Kong Derby and Audemars Piguet Queen Elizabeth II Cup hero Werther.
"We don’t expect him to win by a margin, because he never does, but he did what he had to do today as usual,” said winning trainer John Size.
"The second horse is very hard to beat under those circumstances, he’s beaten us before in a similar type of race, and I thought ours did what he had to do.”
Retained to race by his breeder,
Sun Jewellery raced in Australia as Tan Tat Sun and is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Tan Tat De Lago from good producer Tan Tat Star, a sister to Group 1 winner Umrum.
