Cheshire Oaks (Listed) 1m3f (2200m), 3yo fillies
SOMEHOW ridden by
Ryan Moore won the
Cheshire Oaks at Chester on Wednesday by a half-length despite the filly being unsuited on the ground and the tricky layout of this speed track.
Ryan showcased why he is considered the best Flat jockey in the world as he nursed a victory out of the filly who looked uncomfortable throughout but her class rose to the top.
Sent off the 8-15 favourite,
the beautifully-bred daughter of Fastnet Rock and Oaks winner Alexandrova (by Sadler’s Wells) was off the bridle at an early stage, not handling the unique contours of this track.
Last at halfway, Moore was just trying to keep in touch when outsider Play Gal made a break.
Moore was able to ask a few questions once the pace quickened and
SOMEHOW began to respond, passing several rivals.
The Aidan O’Brien trained filly was never travelling with any fluency and still had plenty of ground to make up turning for home, but Ryan Moore managed to find enough of a finish to grind out a half-length defeat of Moorside.
Moorside and Diamonds Pour Moi filled the placings but
SOMEHOW came home to win by a ½ len x ½ len.
Moore said: “She never travelled sweetly.”
Moore was having to nurse and keep her balanced along a fair way from home but in the straight,
SOMEHOW reeled in the leaders to score an impressive and determined win in the conditions.
Moore felt
SOMEHOW was still very inexperienced and that was the problem on the ground. He said “I always felt she was going to do enough, I'm very, very pleased. She was just green, she's inexperienced and she'd won a Leopardstown maiden. Better ground, and round here, it's a different kettle of fish."
Epsom, and the Oaks, is the target for SOMEHOW. Before the race SOMEHOW was a 25-1 chance for the Gr1 Investec Oaks but is now into 14-1 with big bookmaker Coral.
Trainer Adain O’Brien was delighted with the filly and was exceptionally pleased with the way she hit the line and the education she will gain from this race.
Adian said: "Ryan gave her a marvellous ride and taught her plenty. She's still half asleep. I bring them here to try and sharpen their minds. It's good for the lazy ones, it just wakes them up."
“She was very asleep going along and I thought she was going to have to be lucky but Ryan gave her a class ride,” O’Brien said. “He was very happy with her when he came in.”
“No matter what you work her with, she just works to them, no matter how fast or slow they are. I think mentally she just hasn’t really clicked in yet, but she’s probably always going to be a laid-back filly. Around here, it’s a very quick place if you’re sleeping a bit. When we do a bit with her next week we’ll be hoping that she’s come alive, that it will click her into gear.”
The promising filly is another success story for FASTNET ROCK with SADLER’S WELLS mares.
This cross is proving highly successful. SOMEHOW became the 15th Stakes Winner bred on this cross,
which includes 4 Gr1 Winners: FIRST SEAL, MAGICOOL, QUALIFY and DIAMONDSANDRUBIES.
This is the same cross as our Gorgeous Grey with GAI by
FASTNET ROCK from DISTINCTLY (IRE) (by SADLER’S WELLS).
Our Colt is a 3/4 brother to 4 winners including Gr1 VRC Oaks placed SUMMERBLISS.
DISTINCTLY (IRE) is an unraced daughter of Gr1 Winner INFAMY.
This is a family that boasts 10 Champions, 13 Stallions at Stud, 66 Stakes Winners including 9 Gr1 Winners.
We have purchased our Fastnet Rock colt and asked GAI to polish the attractive colt into a potential Classics and Cups contender with a view of aiming specifically at the Guineas and Derbies as a 3yo.
