It’s fantastic when a plan comes to fruition.
Congratulations to a top team of owners whom race SONDELON a 3yo gelding by
LONHRO x TRISARA who
faced the starter for the first time and scored an impressive win in Race 6 at Newcastle the SUEZ 3YO Maiden Plate on Thursday afternoon.
Trained to perfection by Champion Trainer Gai Waterhouse and co-trainer Adrian Bott, the inexperienced
SONDELON proved there are better wins in store than a Maiden at Newcastle, in the way pilot Tim Clark was able to get the best out of
SONDELON to claim victory.
Backed into a clear favourite from $4.00 to start $2.60 favourite, supporters were cheering loudly as
SONDELON scored.
Aimed for a first up win, Gai and Adrian had polished the magnificent looking
SONDELON into an awesome looking horse to face the starter for the first time.
Still very much a work in progress,
SONDELON has as many tricks as a magician, mostly around the barriers but the hard work the stable put in was rewarded with exemplary manners around the barriers and we saw the horse jump away cleanly.
The pressure was on from the outset in this event with a very fast tempo applied early by a couple of runners.
Tim found himself positioned in 3rd spot, 3 lengths off the leaders at the 1000m.
Sondelon was very green and proved a handful for Tim Clark, as the horse wanted to drop the bit several times in the run.
At the 1000m, again at the 700m, then at the 600m he had to be reminded by Tim to concentrate and then, as they turned for home Tim had to persuade him to extended.
At the 300m, runner-up Gresham (Brenton Avdulla) moved up on our outside and then laid in, bumping
Sondelon twice. That seemed to inspire
Sondelon to realise that he was in a competition and like all good alpha male horses,
Sondelon responded by running the fastest last 200m sectional of the race, to pull away and win posting a 0.65 length x 0.57 length margin.
To do so much wrong in the race, when on debut over a testing 1400m, against horses with good formlines and then, to cop a few bumps from a rock hard fit horse and still sizzle the last 200m sectional is very exciting for all connections.
Certainly the handsome son of Lonhro gives us a strong belief that the further he goes, the better he will be and he’s already crying out for further.
It’s been a long patient wait, to build
Sondelon to a racing prospect. From day 1 we knew he had ability but it was between his ears that Gai and Adrian had the biggest battle with him and he is a
credit to the skills of the team at Tulloch Lodge, the track staff and Tim Clark who together have polished Sondelon into a winner on debut.
