Starspangledbanner scores another Royal Ascot Gr2 Winner

Starspangledbanner made it two (2) Royal Ascot Stakes Winners from two (2) runners in two (2) days when his awesome filly Anthem Alexander was victorious in the Gr2 Queen Mary Stakes following on from slashing win of his boom colt The Wow Signal in the Gr2 Coventry Stakes on the opening day.

Sixth on debut at The Curragh last month on very heavy ground, the Edward Lynam trained filly improved sharply at her next start on top of the ground over 1000m at Tipperary exploding away and win by seven lengths.

That win prompted connections to aim higher and their dreams have been realised with Gr2 success.

Slow out of the gates, Anthem Alexander settled just behind the speed and travelled strongly before letting down with a good turn of foot

Taken to the front at the 250m by jockey Pat Smullen, Anthem Alexandra fought on to the line to win the 1000m sprint by a neck in a big field of 21.

"She's brave and very quick," Smullen said. "She was a little bit sluggish away from the gate. The gap was closing up, so I had to take it, which was maybe even a little bit too soon for her.”

"She's still a little bit green, there's a lot of improvement in her. She could have given up if she was weak-minded but she's 100 per cent tough."

Trainer Edward Lynam is one of Europe’s leading trainers and is constantly achieving success at the highest level. So when he states she is "the real deal and possibly the best horse I have trained” that is a major confidence builder. Lynam said her next target is likely to be the Cherry Hinton Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting.

UK Racing Post were positive in their assessment of the filly - ANTHEM ALEXANDER clocked a fast time when bolting up by 7 lengths at Tipperary on her previous start, and she was a well-backed favourite to follow up here. Last off the bridle, she quickened nicely and found enough to hold off her rivals late. She´s a half-sister to Dandy Man, who had a frustrating time of it at Ascot, never winning but running several big races in defeat, including three top four finishes in the King´s Stand Stakes. It wouldn´t be a surprise to see her return for one of the big two sprints next year, but in the shorter term her trainer nominated the Cherry Hinton as her likely next race.

Retained to race by her breeder after being passed in at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Anthem Alexander is the fifth winner from Gr3 winning Night Shift mare Lady Alexander, whose offspring are headed by brilliant Gr3 winning sprinter Dandy Man, while two of her daughters have left Stakes Winners Hamza and Alkasser.

A four-time Gr1 winning son of Choisir, unfortunately Starspangledbanner only has a hand full of foals due to extreme fertility issues. So they are as rare as hen’s teeth with just 14 named foals in the Northern Hemisphere to date, he has seen 7 race = 4 winners and 2 placegetters including 2 x Gr2 Winners.

Ironically Starspangledbanner who stood his first season at Coolmore Stud for a service fee of $44,000 was sacked by Coolmore as being non-commercial due to his very low fertility and is now based at Rosemont Stud in Victoria where he will cover a small book of mares to give him every opportunity to get as many in foal as possible. It’s a major bonus for the stud and a dream come true.

Dynamic Syndications backed the sire earlier this year and purchased a spectacular filly by STARSPANGLEDBANNER from VAZIRI.

Since then our filly’s pedigree page has had a major improvements.

Specifically with our filly, the fact she is by the exciting first crop sire doing a marvellous job STARSPANGLEDBANNER appears a huge advantage and the cross has achieved good success to date with 72 Stakes Winners (including 9 Gr1 Winners) bred on the extended Danehill / Danzig cross, there is every opportunity that our filly could also achieve valuable black type to the pedigree herself.
