Raven's Pass-Nightime Colt
For the European racing fans amongst us, the name “Tattersalls” would be instantly recognised as Europe’s #1 Bloodstock Auctioneer. Like Inglis and Magic Millions sales here in Australia, they have hundreds of hopeful buyers flock to their sale grounds each year in anticipation that they could secure themselves the next superstar of racing. Yesterday was the opening day of the Tattersalls October Book which is regarded as Europe’s Premier Yearling sale. The early signs have been extremely positive and the sale has got off to a sensation start with figures well up on last year.
139 lots sold on the day one of the sale for a total of 23,016,000 guineas (A$34.32m) – the highest recorded turnover on a single day since the inception of the sale in 2003.
Overall, turnover was up 27% on the opening session last year, whilst the average of 165,583 guineas ($247,144) was up 9% and the median up 10%.
The top lot on day one, a Raven's Pass-Nightime Colt, went for 800,000 guineas ($1.19m) on a day where eight lots sold for 500,000 guineas or more compared with a total of nine lots over the three day sale last year.

However the importance of these figures can been clearly seen when we take a look at the results from an Australia bloodstock perspective. It has long been the case that European markets dictate the trends of the Australian and NZ thoroughbred industries and we expect the coming season to be no different. There are high amounts of anticipation that our markets will have equally strong results especially with the increased prizemoney that we have seen in NSW over the past 3 months.
The first time we expect to see the increase in vendor spending is at the Ready to Run sale at Karaka in New Zealand coming up in November. Last year was one of the strongest Ready to Run sales to date and another increase is expected to occur based on current worldwide trends.
Dynamic will potentially be active at the Karaka based sales as we head over to inspect a shortlist of lots that we have highlighted in the catalogue. There are a number of extremely well bred individuals that will be inspected closely to distinguish whether they pass our strict selection policy. The figures from the 2011 sale have been listed below and despite the good showing last year, we are sure to witness an even stronger performance this year at Karaka come the 20th and 21st of November.

The Tattersalls sale results will become even more relevant when looking through the corresponding yearling catalogues in Australia over the first half of 2012. Yearling sale trends often hold up across continents as the figures are a representation of the thoroughbred industry as a whole. The industry is performing at exceptionally strong levels currently and the hype around racing on the back of Black Caviar and Frankel is bringing racing to audiences that it never has before. These factors coupled with the strong Australian economic market are enough to suggest that the horse auctioneers are set for a good year in the sale ring.
With the breeding season in full swing leading Australian auction houses Magic Million and Inglis will be eagerly watching the sale overseas and hoping to see the good results continue. The upcoming Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale and the Summer Book of the Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale are fast approaching in January with auctioneers and breeders alike all smiles after seeing the strong showing in the UK.
We anticipate another extremely strong year in the sale ring over the 2012-13 season and Dynamic will be looking to add to the excellent crop of thoroughbreds that we currently have on our books. Whilst there are no guarantees in racing, what you can be assured of is the hard work and long hours that we put in to ensure you are getting sound, well bred, quality yearlings. Stay tuned to the Dynamic website for more sale news and updates on the strength of the current Australian and New Zealand markets.
