The weekend before it was Savabeel’s son SWORD OF OSMAN who added stakes success with a win in the Gr2 James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes at Te Rapa.
On Saturday, New Zealand’s Champion Sire added two (2) new Stakes Winners, numbers 77 and 78 to his already bulging resume.
It was a terrific afternoon for the Waikato Stud based stallion as Savabeel saw two of his progeny register their first stakes wins while also maintaining their respective unbeaten records.
On debut the 2yo EXUBERANT had been a trial winner for trainer Stephen Marsh ahead of his debut victory in the 2yo Listed Wellesley Stakes at Trentham.
“To do that at his first start in a Listed race shows he’s a pretty classy animal,” Marsh’s racing manager Todd Pollard said.
“He’s a lovely looking 2-year-old, not overly big, but he’s a beautiful horse.”
Exuberant was ridden close to the pace by Jason Waddell and finished willingly in the straight for an impressive victory.
The colt is bred for success being out of the O’Reilly mare Merrily.
Exuberant has become the 11th Stakes Winner out of O’Reilly mares which is the best cross for Savabeel.
THE CHOSEN ONE another gifted son of Savabeel, is right on target for a Group One assignment.
The classy 3yo colt was successful on debut at Waverley and had no trouble bridging the gap to black type company. On Saturday he led all the way to win the Listed Zacinto Stakes at Riccarton in a canter.
The Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman will have a strong contender for next month’s Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (1600m) after The Chosen One’s (NZ) (Savabeel) dominant victory.
The unbeaten son of Savabeel went into the mile feature as a dominant $2.80 favourite after winning on debut at Waverley earlier this month and won accordingly.
He was pushed forward from the jump by jockey Matt Cameron and was able to dictate terms throughout, winning by two and a quarter lengths over In A Twinkling.
“It was a very good run, he won quite easy,” Baker said. “I thought he was a chance from what he has shown.”
The three-year-old will put his unbeaten record on the line in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas against last weekend’s Gr2 Winning son of Savabeel in Sword of Osman.
