Congratulations to our Owners of WEDGIE (3yo Filly Foxwedge x Undercover) on the valuable Black-Type the Filly earned in the Gr3 Kembla Grange Classic 1600m on Friday.
The Gai Waterhouse / Adrian Bott trained Filly had given her ownership team a thrill by winning at both her starts this preparation and facing the starter for her third run, she ran significantly better than punters had anticipated when going down by just 0.7 length to
LUVALUVA and TORVILL.
WEDGIE in full flight
The race didn’t quite pan out as anticipated with 2 fillies MANDYLION and PANDAMONIUM giving themselves hard runs by setting a very quick tempo. Unfortunately that prevented WEDGIE getting into a rhythm as she had to chase to keep in touch.
TORVILL (a Stakes Winner and Gr1 / Gr2 placed) who only had 55.0kgs (a 1.0kg weight disadvantage) stalked WEDGIE 54.0kgs whilst the Winner LUVALUVA (Gr2 Winner) (57.0kgs) had the sit on TORVILL.
As the field hit the 300m it became a 3 horse war and in a driving finish LUVALUV who had the easier run, scored by 0.2 lengths over TORVILL with WEDGIE 0.5 length behind the runner-up.
WEDGIE as a Benchmark 66 horse was badly treated at the weights, meeting TORVILL (91) and LUVALUVA (87) poorly. At a True Weight, with WEDGIE on 54.0kgs TORVILL would have to carry an extra 12.5kgs and LUVALUVA an extra 10.5kgs. However under Set Weights and penalties both horses had a big advantage over WEDGIE. So it just confirms the merit of the run.
Her effort in this race was awesome for a filly having won 2 races at the provincials.
From a Brilliant Black-Type family of our own Golden Slipper winner POLAR SUCCESS, WEDGIE by adding valuable Black-Type has assured herself of significant residual value upon racetrack retirement.
We will let the dust settle however WEDGIE is on target towards the VINERY and the ATC OAKS.
WEDGIE is another Black-Type youngster for her very good sire FOXWEDGE who stands at Newgate Farm.
