"Black-Book" the name
MISS COBRA for the
Gr1 New Zealand Oaks.
Last Saturday’s
Wanganui Guineas (LR) in NZ saw a shock result with the winner
Alcadesa - a maiden filly starting at 50/1, hanging on to defeat her rivals by half a head. A nice effort by the winner who had the race run to suit, she dug deep to stick her head out for the camera.
It was a solidly run race early, so the back markers were expected to find the line however on a
bottomless Heavy 11 surface (NZ rating), it was always going to be difficult assignment to make ground, especially for fillies taking on the boys and even harder still for those fillies that were racing well back in the field, to be able to plough through the mud.
Alcadesa clocked 1:26.80 and came from worse than mid-field and wide to cause the upset. The daughter of Nom De Jeu, strides out like a wet-tracker and on her dam’s side, there are swimmers galore. So it wasn’t surprising to pedigree buffs that the filly could excel on the bottomless track.
Runner-up
Perfect Harmonee (Nadeem gelding) had looked the winner near the post swooping home after also travelling midfield and improving to be fifth when turning for home.
Lucky Edie (Swiss Ace gelding) faded back into third spot having travelled second throughout and hitting the lead at the 200m but didn’t run out the 1400m fully, to be grabbed late.
There was an eye-catching, strong, late run from maiden filly
Miss Cobra.
She was shuffled back to
last mid-race some 20 lengths off the leaders but she left nobody in any doubt that she is the real deal when it comes to being a
genuine NZ Oaks candidate - and being out of the high quality broodmare
Athenri (by Zabeel) is also very significant.
SHOOTOFF
Not only is she a daughter of a
Zabeel mare – but her half-brother is
SHOOTOFF – the Gr1 Queensland Derby Winner and Gr3 Frank Packer Plate Winner.
"Bred to stick like chewing-gum to a blanket", she announced herself as a
genuine Oaks Contender.
Another flashing-lights run was that of
Gobstopper who hit the line hard also from well back for an excellent sixth. He too is a maiden that looks bound for the
NZ Derby and he too is out of a Zabeel dam.
The form from this race on Saturday is likely to stand up strongly, as some of the best from NZ this racing year, with these two highlighted horses both being powerful run-on types.
Both still maidens - (but not for long) -
Miss Cobra is bound for the Oaks and Gobstopper the Derby.
They are the most appealing types at this early stage for these
NZ Classic Races.
In particular
the team at Dynamic will be closely following the fortunes of
MISS COBRA with great interest.
The fact that
MISS COBRA ran 4th in the Wanganui Guineas has added valuable data and commerciality into the pedigree page for the filly.
The fact she is a half-sister to a
Group 1 Queensland Derby winner is very important too !
However from
Dynamic Syndications position, our biggest interest is
she’s a daughter of Athenri –
therefore - she is the 3yo half-sister to our spectacular 2yo filly by CAPE BLANCO from ATHENRI.
Wow – can you imagine how excited we would be if MISS COBRA grabbed the NZ Oaks ?
We would then own the
half-sister to a Derby Winner and to an Oaks Winner.
Our filly would be worth a fortune – especially considering
CAPE BLANCO was the Champion stayer of Ireland and the USA the opportunities on the track and at stud are endless.
CAPE BLANCO
Shares in our CAPE BLANCO / ATHENRI filly are only $8,050 and
she is with legendary HALL OF FAME trainer – GAI WATERHOUSE.
For owners who ever wanted a contender for CLASSICS and CUPS – we strongly recommend you to review our filly.
