The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained five-year-old Fabrizio shook off his hard Epsom Handicap run with an easy comfortable all-the-way win at Randwick in the Bartier Perry Benchmark 93 Handicap (1600m) on Saturday.
FABRIZIO
Unfortunately for the horse’s connections, he bolted in the Epsom Handicap under French jockey Johan Victoire, establishing a ridiculous tempo and a massive lead before compounding in the straight, but the fortnight back-up didn't deter anyone, as the market sent the son of High Chaparral out as the $1.70 favourite and he didn’t disappoint.
Jockey Josh Parr bounced Fabrizio to the front in the small field and enjoyed a pressure-free run in transit, skipping clear topping the rise to score by 4.25 lengths. Iggi Pop ran on for second, 1.25 lengths ahead of stablemate Our Boy Nicholas in third.
"He's just a very difficult horse to ride," Parr said. "From the moment you sit on him he just has you working.
"I think maybe the Epsom had something to do with him wanting to get running from the 1000m with me today but thankfully in a low pressure race we got away with it."
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott did a remarkable job to get Fabrizio back into winning form so quickly after his gut-busting Epsom run and the dynamic duo don't plan on stopping now.
"He came through the Epsom in great order so we had no hesitation in running him here today," co-trainer Adrian Bott said.
"We'll have a think about it tonight and tomorrow. He's got the option to freshen-up for a race like the Villiers or potentially take him straight down to Melbourne.
"There are a couple of nice races for him down there and he should be able to measure up."
Fabrizio’s win was the 10th metropolitan win for the new 16/17 season for the Waterhouse/Bott partnership and their 21st NSW winner for the season. With the smaller stable numbers compared to the big 3 of Waller, O’Shea and Snowden,
the Waterhouse/Bott stable sits comfortably in 4th spot and is on a huge roll.
