A colt by
Woodside Park Stud’s Written Tycoon from Peppie has topped the opening day of the
2016 Inglis Great Southern Sale when selling for $170,000 to the partnership of Ampulla Lodge and Ascot Farm.
The Written Tycoon colt was one of eight lots to sell for $100,000 or more today, when 152 weanlings were sold at an average of $31,378.
Ampulla Lodge made a $500,000 pinhook profit with the top lot from last year’s Great Southern Sale, a colt by Exceed And Excel, and were delighted to secure what they thought was the best colt in this year’s sale in Lot 85.
"He had good bone, a good walk and a great head and eye. It may be a line that gets used a lot, but we definitely thought he was the colt of the sale,” said Ceri Jostlear.
By the sire of Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, the colt is the eleventh foal from Danehill mare Peppie, which has already produced Group 2 winner Sea Battle and the Hong Kong Group 3 placed Full Of Joy.
Tyreel Stud sold their three weanlings today for $160,000, $140,000 and $120,000, eclipsing their expectations but rewarding their judgement on targeting their stock at the Great Southern Sale.
"We noted the growth of the market at this sale last year so purposely targeted four of our weanlings towards the sale this year, and have been rewarded so far with all three making at least double their service fees,” said Linda Monds of Tyreel Stud.
The colt by Pierro from Mourasana (Lot 63) was knocked down for $140,000 then a few hours later the New Zealand buyer went to $160,000 to secure Lot 108, a colt by Pierro from San Cristobel.
The third of Tyreel’s weanlings Lot 84, a colt by All Too Hard from Listed winning mare Penny Banger went for $120,000.
The progeny of first season sires also came under strong competition.
New Zealand’s Lyndhurst Farm went to $130,000 for colt by Dundeel from Whitesails (Lot 163) that was sold by Two Bays Farm, while $120,000 was required to purchase Lot 158, a colt by Akeed Mofeed from Video Star that was offered by Swettenham Stud.
Hinchinbrook was the sixth sire today to have a weanling reach six figures with Merrivale Farm’s filly from Riverina (Lot 102) selling for an even $100,000.

It’s been a few big weeks for WRITTEN TYCOON.
Three weeks ago his son MUSIC MAGNATE won the Gr1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) in Brisbane.
Then at the Magic Millions breeding stock sale and WRITTEN TYCOON had 6 of his babies sell through the ring for an average of $125,000.
However these stats when reviewed, reveal greater information about the demand the professional market has on his stock.
Of the 6 sold, one was not of merchantable quality. That left the remaining
5 lots that were offered. They
grossed $740,000 for an average of $148,000 and a median of $140,000.
James Harron Bloodstock purchased the 2 most expensive at
$230,000 and $170,000 whilst the other 3 sold for
$140,000, $100,000 and $100,000.
Not a bad result for their breeders who produced these babies off a
$19,800 service fee !
The demand for anything by WRITTEN TYCOON comes off the back of the break-out season he is having that has seen the stallion produce
3 individual Gr1 Winners - CAPITALIST (2yo), LUNA ROSSA (2yo) and MUSIC MAGNATE (4yo).
Now the stallion is up to
17 Stakes Winners in a career that is flying along.
This season he has

In such demand by professional breeders,
Written Tycoon had a service fee increase to $49,500 for the upcoming 2016 serving season and instantly the Book Full sign went up. This certainly indicated that breeders considered him "great value" at this price level and another big increase is sure to follow in 2017.
