Too short a trip and not yet fully wound up, the Darren Smith trained mare Strathspey (Al Maher / Bryce Canyon) trounced her opposition on Sunday afternoon at Wyong and gave her supporters no need for concern when sent her out as the market mover and dominant $2.80 favourite and won accordingly.
Strathspey won the Wyong Rugby League Club Benchmark 60 Handicap over 1100m.
She became 252nd Race Win for Dynamic Syndications yearlings and our 20th Win for the current 2011-12 Racing Season.
The fact that we have had 20 wins already for 2011-12 is a fantastic result but equally as impressive is the fact that Darren Smith has trained 10 of these winners in the first 3 months of the season.
This filly was one of the fillies we leased from our good friends at Emirates Park and we are delighted to be having success for the Emirates team as well.
This was our mares 7th race start and this recorded her 2nd win with 1 second, 2 thirds. However last start she had failed to finish at Wyong when she jumped away awkwardly and was then pulled up after 100m by her rider that day. When she returned to the stables nothing appeared wrong and the mare was fully vetted so the cause of that day was a mystery. Since then she had a change of stables after it was decided by the connections the mare may benefit by moving from the city to the inform stables of Darren Smith at Newcastle.
Darren remains 5th on the NSW Trainers Premiership with now 19 wins and 39 placings for the season and an incredibly high 23.08% Winning Strike Rate. Is it any wonder Dynamic clients enjoy their association with the likable trainer.
Simply the mare looked a different horse today and her magnificent appearance shows she is obviously enjoying being out in the paddocks at Darren's purpose built private training facilities.
Strathspey is from a pedigree that suggests she will enjoy a trip so today's 1100m scamper was never going to suit her well but she made light work of the 1100m and 57.0kgs.
Exceptionally well ridden by the boom jockey Tommy Berry, the mare jumped into stride well and pushed up to take a forward position one out on the back of the leaders. As the field shuffled up approaching the turn Tommy was cluttered up amongst runners but was able to push out behind the leaders and angle to the centre of the track. Then in a twinkling she dashed up and hit the lead full of running to go on and score with ease under hands and heels. She recorded a slick 1:03.00 for the 1100m running home in a quick 34.46 secs the last 600m.
Tommy reported that the mare still had good improvement to come but he knew he was on the winner a long way from home. He said he could not believe how well the mare looked in the enclosure and how strong she felt in the run. He reported she was still very strong to the post and was full of running after the line which is in agreement with our views the mare wants at least 1600m or further. He advised the owners he believed she was at least mid week city class at the right distances after hopefully another winning display next start over a bit further and they had some fun coming their way and he was keen to ride her at her next assignment.
Congratulations to the crew that race this nice mare:
