ELMALKA became the 11th Individual Group 1 Winner and 77th Stakes Winner for KINGMAN, when she won the Group 1 QIPCO Newmarket One Thousand Guineas (1600m). KINGMAN then sired a stakes double on the Newmarket (UK) program, when another promising filly FRIENDLY SOUL won the Pretty Polly Stakes LR (2000m) at only her second career start, earning the Juddmonte Farm based KINGMAN his 78th Stakes Winner.
KINGMAN - Super sire
KINGMAN will also see his Australian Group 1 winning son KING COLORADO become a new addition for Widden Stud Victoria this spring.
KING COLORADO
The Group 1 QIPCO Newmarket One Thousand Guineas (1600m) is part of the QIPCO British Champions Series. It is for the 3yo fillies, and this year it delivered somewhat of a surprise victory to ELMALKA, an inexperienced daughter of KINGMAN, who was having just her third race start.
ELAMALKA (yellow / outside) winning the Gr1 Thousand Guineas 1600m
ELMALKA became her sire’s 11th Individual Group 1 Winner and his 77th Stakes Winner.
Elmalka, trained by Roger Varian, charged home from last to score a thrilling win by a neck over Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes Winner Porta Fortuna (Caravaggio) with game Justify filly Ramatuelle holding on for third.
It was French raider Ramatuelle (Justify) who looked to have the race won but the 9-2 second favourite saw the closers descended on her over the final 50 yards, with Elmalka finishing strongest of all to strike at juicy odds of 28-1, with Porta Fortuna coming through for second.
Elmalka had begun to make headway entering the final furlong and got up in the final strides to prevail. At the finish, she had a neck to spare with a further short-head back to third.
ELAMALKA returning to scale
Elmalka had dwelt at the start and was at the rear of the 16 runners in the early part of the mile contest. The daughter of KINGMAN in the hands of former champion jockey Silvestre De Sousa was doing her strongest work late, stepping out to a mile.
Silvestre de Sousa, who was UK champion jockey in 2015, 2017 and 2018, had returned to riding in the UK at the start of this year, after a stint in Hong Kong.
De Sousa said: "It's unbelievable, I've been trying to win a Classic for so long, so it's great to get one.
"Coming down into the dip I could see the horses in front weren't getting away from me and I hoped when I hit the rising ground she would pick up.
"She's still a bit green and inexperienced, but she ran a good race at Newbury and she's just learning. She's really tough and game."
“She got very unbalanced. She just took a couple of strides to organise herself. I was happy with the way she travelled but she's just inexperienced. She's very tough and I think the further she's going to go the better she's going to be. She's very easy to ride. She switches off. I was always behind the bridle so when she goes up in trip it shouldn't be a problem.”
“I’m so proud. I’ve been trying to win a Classic for so long and it’s just an amazing feeling.”
Elmalka won her debut on the all-weather track in late November before stepping out for the first time this year to finish third to the Italian wonder filly Folgaria in the Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes and has won her first Group 1 at just her start.
It was the third Classic win for Roger Varian, who was delight with the result.
Varian said "It's a huge thrill that hasn't sunk in yet. You don't come into these races expecting that you may win but she ran a great race at Newbury and all credit to James Doyle, who gave her a great ride that day.”
"He got an education into her there and she finished strong. We weren't on the 1,000 Guineas trail but after that there was such a turnaround in the filly in the past fortnight that it made sense. I was in two minds whether to run her, but I wanted to do right by the filly and we decided to give it a go.”
Elmalka is a half-sister to 3-time Group 1 winner Benbatl, who shuttles from Japan to Woodside Park Stud Vic, this spring, and is the second Group 1 winner among five winners from top class dual Group 1 winning Selkirk mare Nahrain, a daughter of Group 2 winner Bahr tracing back to champion New Zealand mare La Mer.
KINGMAN’S second stakes winner on the day and 78th overall came when – FRIENDLY SOUL, trained by John Gosden, was having just her second race start following a debut win at Kempton last year.
She scored a dominant length and a half win over race favourite Kalpana (Study of Man).
FRIENDLY SOUL remains undefeated winning the Pretty Polly 2000m LR
“Friendly Soul is a lovely filly and I think she is a mile and a quarter filly. She won't be an Epsom filly, but we might make a visit to Chantilly (for the French Oaks),” said John Gosden.
A homebred, Friendly Soul is the latest stakes-winner for exceptional blue hen mare In Clover, a Group 3 winning daughter of Inchinor.
In Clover has had 12 named foals and all have raced to produce nine winners that include a whopping seven stakes-winners – Call the Wind (Gr1), With You (Gr1), We Are (Gr1), plus Listed winners In Crowd, Dream Clover, Incahoots and now Friendly Soul.
Here in Australia KINGMAN Yearlings are as rare as hen's teeth as mares have to be served in England to Southern Hemisphere time and exported here in foal.

Shane Rose commented that our COLT “is a really nice horse, great attitude, coping with the work well, he’s got a lovely big action, I am really pleased with how he started and how he finished off.
“You can see that he has enjoyed the work, he understood and wanted to learn what he is doing, and you can’t ask for more than from what I have seen with him working. Enthusiastic, nice mover, good attitude, not much more than you can ask for.”
