Wow! What a
WIN by our
2yo debutant LOVE TAP as the Grey Flash produced a barnstorming win from back in the ruck at his first career start against older horses to
win Race 7 at Nowra on Tuesday the Hanlon Windows Maiden Hcp over 1200m in a slick time of 1:11.69 on a Soft 7 surface ridden by
Keegan Latham.
2yo Grey LOVE TAP winning on debut
Everybody Loves a Grey !
LOVE TAP (by TAPIT (USA) x SMOKEY’S LOVE (USA)) is a 2yo purchased by
Dynamic Syndications from the 2019 Magic Millions for $110,000 + GST and was the
first horse we publicly syndicated with “The People’s Trainer – RICHARD FREEDMAN” of the FREEDMAN BROTHERS Training Stables (Richard, Michael and Will Freedman).
From the first time we threw a saddle on
LOVE TAP, he displayed he was potentially a very nice prospect, but he just needed time to grow into his frame. He is still immature but has the making of a quality middle-distance 3yo prospect and he will be aimed at some nice 1600m – 2000m events in the spring.
LOVE TAP our Grey Flash was literally flying past the post
This debut win was amazing.
The races were at Nowra which can feel boggy even on a good track surface, but we had last use of a Soft 7 track that was showing signs of distress by the time the final race was run.
Further, his win was totally against the pattern of the day which suited on-pace horses.
Whilst we want to keep a lid on our excitement and dreams,
it’s the clock that tells the tale.
He ran home in a
sizzling 33.92 and was the only winner on the day to break 34.00 secs for the last 600m, whilst his final two sectionals were run in 11.03 and 11.39 on the boggy ground.
For a 2yo on debut, who is still quite immature and has so much to learn, to be so professional is exciting.
We have always believed, on his conformation and pedigree, he may be able to win a 2yo race, but he wants 1600m plus to shine.
So, when acceptances came out for this race, it mapped out well, showing that there would be a fair bit of pace early and we could take a sit and run-on over the final 600m.
However, there were 7 scratchings reducing the field to 8 runners and the speed came out of the race had us concerned that the 1200m may be a touch short.
Add in the fact it was leader dominated all day, and the thought that we were going to be back in the ruck made us anxious however we didn’t want to change tactics. We wanted to ensure
LOVE TAP had a good experience on his first day at the sport, and he learn to settle and travel which is what he will need over further distances.

So, we stuck solid with the plan to settle and then work into the race.
As the gates crashed back,
LOVE TAP jumped evenly, then
Keegan Latham took hold and allowed our horse to get into a rhythm.
The pace wasn’t genuine up front, as leaders peeled off slow sectionals but Keegan was able to steer
LOVE TAP across to find the fence, settling second last, 5 lengths off the leaders as they crawled along in front.
Approaching the 600m, Keegan angled off the fence to be 3 deep but had cover as the field thundered up to the home turn.
Swinging into the straight, Keegan angled out 4 deep, to be the widest runner on straightening, 4 lengths off the leader.
Balancing up at the 300m, he hit a bit of a flat spot as the two older leaders sprinted away and at that stage the race looked over. We were hopeful to see our youngster rally back and find the line, but we were amazed at exactly what we were watching.
We were chasing the eventual runner-up, 3yo filly Are Zhu Ready, who we were spotting 3.5kg in weights and almost 3 lengths head start at the 150m point as she raced off for the chocolates.
Gotcha !
By the 100m marker we were still two lengths away and then,
LOVE TAP (56.5kgs) ($2.30 fav) delivered the knock-out punch, storming down the outside to go on and have the audacity to be eased down on the line to record a widening 0.4 length win over Are Zhu Ready (53.0kgs) with the 2nd favourite Cubman beaten 2.7 lengths into third.
Forging clear
Whilst we can’t comment as to the potential of his peers in this event, and we certainly don’t get carried away about Nowra form, for a 2yo having his first start, to get back in the field, on a Soft 7 track, and give the older horses a head start and weight and then, run them down against the pattern of the day and in the process deliver remarkably quick sectionals has us excited.
Keegan Latham said to Will Freedman after he hopped off
“That was amazing, and he wants further, he’s a machine.”
Returning to Scale
Living the dream -
LOVE TAP will head straight to the paddock on Wednesday for a few weeks to rest to get his preparation in alignment with the upcoming spring carnival.
