Dynamic young trainer
WILL FREEDMAN scored himself a
“SCHOONER IN COONA” as our 4yo mare
FRANKLY SAVVY (Savabeel x Frankly by Pins) produced her
Second Career Win at her fifth race start, when leading from barriers to finishing post to claim Race 1 on the programme at
Coonabarabran on Saturday afternoon at the NSW Sky2 TAB meeting.
Race 1 was the aptly named “HAVE A SCHOONER IN COONA” CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m).
Ridden a peach by our go-to central west rider
Clayton Gallagher, our pre-race plan was to take bad luck out of the equation by going straight to the front and holding the fence. We anticipated a few of these opposition riders would want to serve it up to our odds-on favourite but we believed we had a far superior runner than her peers and if those riders wanted to do that, then they would only bring their own mounts undone.
The race panned out to perfection and Clayton had
Frankly Savvy leading the fence after 200m.
FRANKLY SAVVY was attacked for the lead from this point, firstly by eventual runner-up King Joffrey and then by a ridiculous ride by the jockey on Bard’s Voice, who must have believed it was a 1000m race rather than a mile, because it took off at the 1200m to sit 3 deep, on speed being hunted along trying to burn across whilst King Joffrey and
Frankly Savvy simply held their spots.
From the 1200m to the home turn there was no change in the order or pattern of the race but as they started to swing into the turn, Clayton slipped a little rein to
Frankly Savvy and the mare responded in strong style.
As the field balanced at the top of the straight, Clayton pushed the ‘go button’ and our mare bounded 2 lengths clear of King Joffrey whilst Bard’s Voice put up the white flag (as it should have) and it dropped out to finish over 12 lengths away in last spot.
Passing the 200m, King Joffrey was trying really hard but was no match for our mare, and as they passed the 100m mark Clayton had the luxury of having an armchair ride to the finishing line whilst the margin was maintained, finishing an eased down 1.9 lengths in front of King Joffrey with Wazena coming out of the chasing pack to claim third spot 2.41 lengths behind
Frankly Savvy.
Adam Watt had identified this race as the right place to run
Frankly Savvy whom we are building and developing her career resume to be an in-demand broodmare prospect when her racing days conclude.
FRANKLY SAVVY has now recorded in
5 Starts: 2-0-1.
This event was a Set Weights Plate restricted to Class 1 horses and Maidens. Meaning the handicapper couldn’t get at our mare.
She would have carried 61.0kgs in a handicap and given the closest rival Wazena 5.0kgs, with all other runners carrying 55.0kgs. However, under the conditions of this event, she was thrown in carrying just
57.0kgs, only
2.0kgs over the limit and was carrying the same weight as Wazena (3rd) was allotted.
Whilst there is no such thing as a certainty, this was as close as one comes on paper, and the mare didn’t let her owners and connections down.
Incredibly our ratings had
Frankly Savvy as a
$1.10 chance, yet we opened at a generous
$1.50 and drifted to
$1.95 before firming late to start at the luxurious price of
$1.85 for what was no more trackwork rather than a competitive event.
Mathematically, those chasing were never capable of running her down when she clocked a slick
1:35.70 for the 1600m off the front. For this class of race, it proved impossible.
A big “Thank You” to Will Freedman for turning out our mare in such fine order, and for doing the hard yards by driving the float from Scone to Coonabarabran for the race.
That is very much a
Team Player Role.
At least for Will, he was able to have a
“Schooner in Coona” and as he reported, he enjoyed a
Rotary Club fund raising Sausage in a Bun!
The win was important, not so much from the prizemoney perspective, however it’s the pedigree page appeal which has been lifted.
This is important because
Frankly Savvy has been nominated for the upcoming MAGIC MILLIONS Broodmare Sale.
She is catalogued as
Lot 671 and her appeal is increased, and as she still has plenty of upside as a racing prospect before she needs to head into her breeding career.
Frankly Savvy is a daughter of the
“Best Sire in the Southern Hemisphere” for producing Stakes Winners and the fact is
SAVABEEL has been the champion sire in NZ for the past seven seasons.
Our mare’s female family also keeps improving.
Her own Dam
FRANKLY has produced 3 foals to race –
All Winners including her
half-brother OCEAN BEYOND who has become a
Stakes Winner.
Whilst
FRANKLY SAVVY’S 3rd Dam is champion mare COURTZA. So as now a lightly raced
dual-winner, from a strong commercial pedigree, she has become a far more attract breeding prospect to commercial breeders.
