It was a Heavy 9 track on the Kensington circuit at Randwick on Wednesday afternoon and our promising Dynamic staying prospect NAVAL COMMISSION (4yo g Merchant Navy ex Parfaits) was lining up in Race 7, the TAB Handicap Bm64 1800m in a field of 10 starters from barrier 10 with Nash Rawiller in the saddle.
Our BOBS EXTRA Bonus monies eligible galloper is trained out of the brilliant Ciaron Maher Stable.
Despite being the race top-weight, lumping 60.5kgs from the visitors draw, he was smashed in the betting from $6.00 into a $3.70 clear favourite and won accordingly, scoring by 0.87 length over runner-up and second favourite Bestower (57.5kgs) ($5.00), with a massive gap of 7.62 lengths to third placed Allhallowtide (59.0kgs) ($11), with a total of 21.35 lengths covering first to last.
NAVAL COMMISSION is a talented racing prospect in the making, and the key with him was to have allowed the 4yo to come to hand without being pushed early, and the results are flowing.
With this win NAVAL COMMISSION banked $39,650 from a $28,400 first prize cheque plus a further $11,250 in BOBS Extra Bonus money.
This was NAVAL COMMISSION’S 11th Race Start: 4 Wins, 2 Seconds, 3 Thirds and $111,275 having won over 1400m, 1700m, 1800m and 2100m. He is a noted mudlark having started 3 times on a Heavy track for 3 wins.
This latest win on the Kenso track was just his third run in for this preparation. He ran a gallant 2nd over a mile first-up carrying 59.0kgs in a Bm66, followed by a tough win over 1700m second-up on a good track at Scone in a Bm66 last start, now followed by this super tough win in town on Wednesday in Bm64 grade.
We were very confident that in a tougher Saturday grade race at Gosford last Saturday, where again he drew the carpark, he would have been hard to toss over 2100m on a Heavy track, however when the meeting was a late transfer due to the state of the track from Gosford to Newcastle, the distance was increased from 2100m to 2200m to accommodate the race on the Newcastle track.
At that point Adam Watt from Dynamic spoke with Ciaron Maher and Joh about the merits of waiting to Wednesday over Saturday's race. The decision was made and they elected to withdraw NAVAL COMMISSION from Saturday's 2200m event to wait for this 1800m, as we felt that the horse was still a little underdone for a slog fest jumping up 500m to a 2200m trip and up a long way in class to Bm72 Saturday company, with just the two shorter course foundation races under the belt.
Again, it proved the right decision, as the ownership team now have their first metropolitan victory with the promise of many more to come as he builds his racecraft and foundation fitness.
A genuine heavy track contender, NAVAL COMMISSION is certainly up at the right time of year as we head into the winter racing months, off a fortnight of torrential rain here in Sydney.
However, this victory wasn’t all “beer and skittles.” It was a tough win from a horse that had zero luck in the run but proved well superior to his peer on the day, giving all his opponents weight, and from the time the gates crashed back we had a torrid time in transit.
Originally intending to roll forward from the wide draw that jumps away on a bend, which is a disaster to those caught wide, NAVAL COMMISSION copped the backwash of an event that wanted to put the pedal to the metal in the first 200m.
Our horse likes to get into a rhythm and keep going at that pace, in a faster than standard tempo, and keep grinding away breaking the hearts of his peers.
In this event with the change of tactics of a few of his competitors, Nash was stuck out wide, 4 deep into the first corner, and sensibly he chose to drop his hands and allow our galloper to get into his rhythm and by the time the field balanced into the back straight, NAVAL COMMISSION was trapped 3 deep at the tail.
Once the early tempo slackened, and having been trapped deep without cover, Nash elected to slowly improve out wide to get up forward of midfield but was still trapped on a limb.
Turning down the side, at the 700m our Dynamic Duo started to improve but as they did, the rider of Zerkhan chose to play jockey and go with us forcing us out 4-wide down the side, but in the process gave his horse little hope, and it stopped badly as it entered the straight.
As the field packed-up and the runs came on the point of the turn, Nash moved up to eyeball the leaders and was now 3 wide but had a lap full of horse underneath despite the torrid run.
As they balanced for the run home, supporters would have accepted then that the hard work and extra ground we had chartered would come against our horse third-up from a spell and lumping the big weight on Heavy ground. However NAVAL COMMISSION and Nash were having none of that negativity.
At the 300m Nash pushed the go button and NAVAL COMMISSION showed a turn of foot and lengthened stylishly which is a fantastic asset for a stayer. He broke two-lengths clear of the pack and the race appeared over.
At the 200m second favourite Bestower with a 3.0kgs pull in the weights and having had a soft run throughout, came out of the pack to give chase. With 100m to run the race was over. Still a two-length margin over the runner-up this pair gaped the chasing brigade.
Over the final 50m our boy started to feel the pinch, but Nash kept his mind on the job and our galloper responded with every stride to hold out the runner-up by the best part of a length and such was the dominance NAVAL COMMISSION had put up a 7.62 length gap back to the cap catchers.
JOB DONE!
Smiling Assassin - Nash Rawiller returns on another Dynamic Winner
Nash was enthusiastic about NAVAL COMMISSION and commented with tongue in cheek “at least we know he will run 2400m!” such was the extra ground he was forced to cover here. Nash added “it was a tough win, and he handled the ground and class with ease.”
“It was a great effort, he’s covered a lot of ground, and I got into a rhythm that I was happy with but just the positioning was horrible. I gave him a bit of room down the side, and let him work up to them, and he really gained a lot of confidence on this track , which is quiet testing. It’s quite gluey and not only heavy but gluey, and I think he showed a really good staying prowess. He feels like a horse that you’re never really getting to the bottom of, and despite there was one flying at me late, he was still picking-up. He’s a chance of making a nice horse, he did a good job today, it was a great effort.”
A Big “Thank You” to Joh and his team at Ciaron Maher’s Sydney Stable on the tremendous job they do with all our Dynamic Syndications horses.
Also to Nash for another tremendous ride wearing our colours.

This win was another personal milestone for the Dynamic Syndications Team.
NAVAL COMMISSION recorded our 880th Overall Race Win and we hit another important KPI as we achieved our 52nd Race Win for the current 2023/24 Racing Season.
Each year we set out to earn a minimum of 52 race wins to average a winner-a-week for the season.
We still have 10 weeks remaining so to have achieved this result already is satisfying indeed for both our Dynamic Syndications Team and all our co-ownership teams that have visited the winner’s circle so far this season.
