The
stats are racking-up for the
“quiet achiever” among this season’s
First Crop sires when USA racetrack hero
American Pharoah (USA) posted his
third Australian winner from just
six (6) runners on Thursday evening when on debut
Patton produced a brilliant win at Pakenham.
Starting a well-backed favourite with champion jockey Craig Williams on top,
Patton proved too strong for his peers.
He jumped evenly and sat beside the pickets travelling in fourth spot behind the leaders and when urged to take an inside gap on straightening, he lengthened stride in the same manner as his sire was noted to do, impressively winning by a widening length and a quarter.
A $675,000 Magic Millions purchase,
Patton is the first foal of Group 2 winner Tsaritsa, a three-quarter sister by Dane Shadow to Group 2 winner Ninth Legion from the family of Group 1 winner Tell a Tale.
Patton became the
third Australian winner for American Pharoah’s first crop in the Southern Hemisphere, having already sired
14 stakes-winners and 13 stakes-placed in the Northern Hemisphere,
three (3) of them Group 1 winners and another five (5) Group 1 placegetters.

American Pharoah progeny are proving they are fast on grass.
“There is nothing like a horse to make a fool of a man.” That saying
certainly applies to the great ones in particular, and
American Pharoah (USA) (Pioneerof the Nile-Littleprincessemma by Yankee Gentleman) who was the
first winner of the US Triple Crown in 37 years is one of those.
AMERICAN PHAROAH - KENTUCKY DERBY
Just before he began his shuttle career from the
USA to Australia,
discussions were held about the
prospects of American Pharoah working as a sire in Australia and it was noted;
“Although he was a two year-old champion, and although there is clearly considerable speed in the distaff side of his pedigree, it would be doing American Pharoah a disservice to expect him to be a prolific sire of precocious sprinting juveniles.
“As a racehorse he was notable for an exceptionally long stride, which was coupled to a phenomenal cardio-vascular system.
“As a result, American Pharoah had tremendous cruising speed, which he could sustain for extended distances. There is certainly every reason to expect him to be able to sire top-class juveniles but generally, in Australian conditions, they are more likely to be in the ATC Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 at 1600m, as a prelude to their classic career, than to be in the Golden Slipper-Gr.1 over 1200m.
With that in mind, breeders were recommended not to send mares that are “too extreme” a contrast in type or aptitude.”
As it is turning out in the Northern Hemisphere,
American Pharoah is getting a lot more speed and precocity than they anticipated and the
exciting news for the Australian industry is that up north, many of his runners have not only been
both fast and early, but they have
also excelled on grass.
When we
analyse the pedigree of American Pharoah, the observation is that his dam Littleprincessemma is by the
very fast Storm Cat horse Yankee Gentleman, and is a three-quarter sister to the
stakes-winning sprinters Storm Wolf and
Misty Rosette.
American Pharoah’s second dam Exclusive Rosette, a daughter of the
Exclusive Native stallion
Ecliptical, was also very speedy, gaining a
stakes-win at two in the 5.5f Florida Thoroughbred Charities Stakes.
American Pharoah’s third dam Zetta Jet is notable for being
inbred 3f x 4f, 4m to
Olympia, a grandson of
Hyperion.
Olympia was so quick that he was able to
defeat Champion quarter-horse mare Stella Moore in a
match race over her preferred distance.
Also,
Yankee Gentleman’s sire Storm Cat was a
very effective sire of turf runners and that
Exclusive Native, the
grandsire of American Pharoah’s second dam, also sired several who showed talent on the grass.
Observations:
Generally
long-striding, on pace, dirt-horses, have
not excelled as
stallions in Australia, Europe or on turf in North America.
Not because their progeny can’t handle turf, rather it’s because they haven't been
suited to our
racing style which puts a premium on a
last 600m finishing kick.
So, those
US stallions superior cardio and bio-mechanical efficiency that made them champion racehorses, may well have seen their progeny cruising coming into the crunch end of the race, but what they
haven’t been able to take advantage of that relative freshness by
changing-up gears into a sprint to the finish.
However, with American Pharoah, if his progeny could be
sent along at a good pace in a turf sprint/mile, their
powerful cardio and relentless stride could well be their major advantage, and that is what appears to be happening with
American Pharoah’s early runners, especially
out of mares that were themselves speedy.
MARVEN
The first of American Pharoah’s progeny to gain a stakes victory was
MARVEN, who scored on dirt on his debut, then made the trip to Europe where
he led throughout to take the five-furlong Prix du Bois-Gr.3 at Chantilly.
Stakes winner
ANOTHER MIRACLE, who captured the Skidmore Stakes at Saratoga, is another who has a background familiar to us here in Australia.
ANOTHER MIRACLE
His dam
Retraceable, who won Canada’s major two-year-old race the Princess Elizabeth Stakes (
our Golden Slipper), is
by Medaglia d’Oro out of a mare by Dehere (who with Storm Cat gives the
Northern Dancer/Secretariat cross).
Another American Pharoah that has
nicked with a mare
by Dehere is the
very promising AS TIME GOES BY – winner of 2 races,
2nd Santa Anita Beholder Mile – Gr1.
Dynamic Syndication believe AMERICAN PHAROAH will certainly work in Australia, but they need to be 3YO – 5YO out to a mile to be seen to full effect rather than 1000m speedy squibs.
When we did our research on American Pharoah prior to the yearling sales, about how he
genetically crossed with
various broodmare sires,
our spies in the US were telling us that this
Dehere cross would be a cross to watch out for.
LISSON GROVE
When we looked at all the pedigrees for yearlings on offer by the USA Racetrack Superstar, and we identified the
American Pharoah out of LISSON GROVE –
a Stakes Winning 2yo by Dehere, this Lot 142 pedigree page to us had
flashing lights on it.
There is no doubt we have targeted the sire’s progeny this year.
His first Australian crop sold like hot cakes and we were priced out of the market, but we anticipated that as the
thoroughbred industry is also a fashion parade, that since his progeny were not going to be early 2yo’s, the market would be off them in their second crop.
American Pharoah ex Blue Money Filly - SOLD OUT
This has proven to be the case and we have
struck twice buying two sensational valued American Pharoah’s, a filly from the Magic Millions ex Blue Money and the wraps on her from our
horse breaker-educator Shane Rose have been strong.
Then from the
Inglis Melbourne Sales, we secured the
colt from Lisson Grove.
The harder you work, the luckier you get and with this colt, we had the
“inside information” about the cross working with
Dehere matched to a stunning looking horse.
He was also a
“foal share” and had to be sold as per the conditions of the contract between
the breeder and Coolmore Stud who stand the stallion.
When our veterinarian
Dr Tim Roberts gave us the green light to buy him declaring he was "
sound of wind and limb," we purchased him to offer to our Dynamic Owners.
Noting the style of racing that appears to suit these US breeds is to be on pace runners then the best stable in Australia for training horses to do that is the Waterhouse / Bott Racing Stables and it was a no brainer that GAI and ADRIAN would train this colt for us.
Our AMERICAN PHAROAH x LISSON GROVE colt is bred to be awesome both commercially and genetically, with size, scope, strength and substance matching a fluid, effortless stride, he is a black-book special.

We also noted that on Thursday,
the 3yo half-brother to our colt named AVOCADO SUNSET won his third race in succession from 5 starts when winning over 1100m.
LISSON GROVE has now produced 4 foals to race; 3 winners & 1 placed.
OUR COLT
With 5% Shares at $10,160 inc GST and ALL COSTS to 1 September, he represents a fabulous opportunity to achieve the ultimate racetrack success on the direct Gr1 producing cross.
