It takes a special type of filly to record the courageous win which was posted by
ASALWAS at just her 3rd career start.
ASALWAS ~ 3yo Filly by Sebring x Marheta scored a determined win in a driving finish to race 2 at Doomben on Wednesday afternoon.

Ridden by apprentice
Matthew McGillivray, ASALWAS won the XXXX Gold Maiden Handicap over 2070m on a Soft 6 surface.
Dynamic Syndications also had another runner in the race named
STREET COMIC who put in a courageous effort to run 3rd.
ASALWAS is bred to stick like chewing gum to a blanket. Her dam
MARHETA won the Doomben Roses Gr3 over 2020m and followed that with a close-up
second placing in the Gr1 Queensland Oaks 2400m.
Purchased by
Dynamic Syndications as a stayer at the Magic Millions, the filly is giving every indication that with race experience, fitness and age, she will be more than handy.
Facing the starter for just the third time in her racing career,
ASALWAS showed the class that suggests there are more wins in store for this beautifully bred filly.
On debut she was beaten a massive
19.4 lengths over 1300m at the Gold Coast on a heavy 10 surface but
trainer Chris Munce, jockey Matt McGillivray and connections didn’t lose heart with her first assignment.
In fact that track was near bottomless on the day and Matthew McGillivray who rode her said
“she just couldn’t handle the track.”
Second up we jumped her out to 1610m on a Soft 5 track at Grafton and with
ASALWAS being able to get a grip on the surface and out to a mile, she stormed home for
3rd of 14 runners beaten less than a length.
Trainer CHRIS MUNCE said the filly had improved off that run and was confident she would run well but the jump out to
2070m at only her third start was the question mark as to whether she was hard enough to take on the boys and the older horses who were both race fit and experienced.
However she has been thriving as the distance and workloads increased.
This city win has turned the good looking daughter of Sebring ex Marheta into a valuable breeding commodity when she eventually retires from racing.
In today’s event, credit must be given to
a superb ride by young Matthew McGillivray who put in a first class ride and
judged to perfection.
Jumping away cleanly
ASALWAS moved up to settle 4th on the fence one pair back. As the field settled into the rhythm ASALWAS found herself one pair back on the heels of the leader tracking the speed until the home turn.
As the field began to bunch
ASALWAS temporarily found herself locked into a pocket with nowhere to move.
At the 300m, a slight gap opened along the fence and Matt drove the filly into the tight room where she dashed through to join the leaders at the 200m.
Over the final furlong it turned into a tough slog as 3 across the track were all within a head of each other as they battled into a 50kmph headwind. In the final 50m
ASALWAS broke clear and went on to score a Long Head win over Star Echo with 1¼ lengths back to our other Dynamic runner
Street Comic in 3rd spot.
This win was also a credit to
trainer CHRIS MUNCE who has been able to polish
ASALWAS into a staying prospect in just 3 starts, despite not handling the bog at her first start. Ruling a line through her debut effort, she has since run 3rd then this win.
Chris Munce:
“Dynamic sent her up to me, although being well bred she took a little while to find her straps, it wasn’t until we started stepping her out over a trip, that she started to enjoy her work and continued improving, especially since Grafton.”
“Monday morning I did a bit of work with her and it was just really good work.”
“She was glowing in the coat here today and she’s got the right physique for a staying filly – and it was only her third start in a race and she’s only a 3yo so there is a lot of improvement there with her and if they can stay up here (in Qld) there is probably a lot of races she could win.”
“She cops the work really well and is now eating to the way I like her too and she is into the routine and just keeps improving.”
“I just wanted to win a metro race with her and now that’s done, I’ll have a talk to the Dynamic boys and we will work out where we go with her.”
“Matt McGillivray is riding really well and he could not have done anymore on the filly and if it wasn’t the ride it was, she doesn’t win.”
“The wind is shocking, terrible and the filly did a great job.”
Matt McGillivray
“She has pulled up a treat and only a small blow”
“Nicely put together.”
“She travelled well the whole way in very confident style. The way she travelled in the race was great. We got into a bit of trouble on the corner, behind Jimmy Byrne, but he peeled off and the run presented itself and she had a bit of turn of foot and I think she loves fighting too.”
"She loves fighting back, she got headed and fought back and was too strong to the line. She’s still only a baby at this stage and Muncey has been holding her together and looking after her real well."
“Look she can get the distance and I think she can get further quite easily – she relaxes really well.”
