AVION FURY -
a four-year-old gelding by More Than Ready x Elan Grenadine produced a
tough, grinding victory when the
$3.90 favourite wore down
Parry Sound ($5.50) to take out Saturday’s
Ironhorse Benchmark 78 Handicap (2100m) with
High Opinion ($15) finishing third at Gosford’s stand-alone Saturday Metropolitan Grade Meeting.
AVION FURY strides clear
His Warwick Farm trainer Glen Thompson had an afternoon to remember, notching his first Saturday grade, Sydney metropolitan win.
Top rider Kerrin McEvoy was in the saddle and said post race,
“It’s nice to get that first metropolitan winner in the Sydney area for the trainer.”
“He’s (Avion Fury) been racing well this prep, he was turned out lovely, he looked great, he gave me a lovely ride. He was in a nice frame of mind and it was pleasing. He travelled nicely. The race was turned on at the 700 but he was up to the task. He got into the race and stayed on well the last bit.”
Trainer Glen Thompson is the son of former Crown Lodge trainer Vic Thompson Jnr and the brother of leading Sydney horseman John. Glen worked alongside John for several years before taking out a licence in his own right.
It certainly was
Avion Fury’s “turn” to win after a terrific campaign. Having performed admirably in races well above his level, he dropped back to a Canterbury 1900m midweek last time out and nothing went right but on Saturday, he got his well-deserved victory.
McEvoy put
Avion Fury on the fence, three pairs back from the speed before popping away from the inside 600m from home.
Avion Fury took plenty of riding out, but McEvoy wasn’t about to let him clock off and on straightening, the pair were the widest and set about gunning down the leaders which they did in the final few strides.
Avion Fury was well backed, starting $3.90 favourite when defeating Parry Sound ($5.50) by long-head with 1-1/4 lengths back to High Opinion ($15) in third.
Avion Fury was purchased by
Dynamic Syndications / Dean Watt Bloodstock (FBAA) at the
