Arabian Lion Leads in a Justify Quinella at Santa Anita
Arabian Lion
It was an impressive maiden breaking performance for Arabian Lion (2c Justify x Unbound, by Distorted Humor) on Sunday, which earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure and the Thoroughbred Daily News “Rising Star” honours for his efforts.
Debuting over six furlongs on the dirt in the
Santa Anita Maiden Special Weight race, the
Bob Baffert trainee went straight to the lead where
he was followed closely by a fellow Justify son Elwood Blues.
That pair ran first and second around the track and never changed positions with
Arabian Lion winning by three lengths over Elwood Blues, who had 2 ¼ lengths on the third-place horse. The rest of the field was over 14 lengths behind the winner.
Arabian Lion is owned by Zeden Racing Stable, who purchased him from Hidden Brook’s consignment for
$600,000 at this year’s OBS April Sale.
Arabian Lion is out of the stakes-placed Unbound, who now has four winners from five runners. The mare is a full sister to stakes-placed Mary Rita, who produced Group 2 winner Major Dude. This colt’s third dam is the great Personal Ensign, who was not only a champion racemare but also a top broodmare.
Among those under Personal Ensign’s name are Group 1 winner and producer My Flag, champion juvenile Storm Flag Flying, Group 1 winners Miner’s Mark, Traditionally, Mr. Speaker, and Seeking The Soul.
Justify is now the sire of 18 individual winners – the second best of any North American first crop sire, and
he leads all North American and European first crop sires with his three group stakes winners and one Group 1 performer.
Jordan a Dominant MSW Winner For Justify
JORDAN
J.R. Caldwell owned and trained
Jordan (2f Justify x Natural Rush, by Indian Charlie) became Justify’s 17th winner with a 3¾ length Maiden Special Weight victory at Remington Park.
Racing over five furlongs on the turf, Jordan was the first out of the gate and immediately went to pacemaking duties. Keeping a slight lead on the field early on, she started pulling away on the turn and in the straight had plenty of time to build her margin.
She won by 3¾ lengths with everyone behind the second-place horse finishing at least 9¼ lengths back.
Jordan is a half-sister to stakes winning Wyatt’s Town and one of two winners out of her winning Indian Charlie dam. That mare is out of multiple graded stakes winner Lu Ravi, who also produced multiple stakes winner Ravi’s Song, the dam of stakes-placed The Bandit, and grand-dam of stakes-placed Patricia L.
Jordan’s Group 3 winning third dam At The Half is also the grand-dam of champion Halfbridled with others under her name including dual Group 1 winner Mshawish and stakes winner and multiple group stakes-placed Clayton.
Natural Rush had a colt from four-time Grade I winner Tiz The Law’s first crop this year.
