Dynamic 3yo Filly OTTILIE (Air Force Blue x Angora by Barathea) made it
back-to-back victories when claiming
Race 7 at Canberra on Friday, the
Exact Electrical Handicap Class 1, 1300m carrying the steadier of
59.5kgs for a 3yo filly against the older males.
Ridden a treat by
Brodie Loy when forced to jump from
barrier 11 in a field of
12 starters,
our Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained filly put an
"exclamation mark" down that she will be a more than handy filly of the future.
OTTILIE was having her
fourth career start, and her
second start for the preparation in this event, run on a
soft 7 surface, where she ran a time of
1:18.13 coming home in an easy effort
35.77 over the last 600m on a deteriorating track.
OTIILIE
OTTILIE now has a career record of 4 Starts: 2 Wins, 2 Seconds and earnings of $45,305.
She has always displayed ability and in her first preparation she ran two seconds, but a lack of maturity and physical development were against her, she has come back a bigger and stronger filly this time and in and
her owners are reaping the rewards.
Having been a
dominant winner at Hawkesbury over 1100m last start, a city race would normally be the likely next target, however at this time of year, the racing calendar is restricted because of the carnival black type races dominating programmes.
OTTILIE winning at Hawkesbury
There simply wasn’t an eligible race at the right trip as a progression step back at the provincials or mid-weeks, especially on a track that wasn’t bottomless due to the heavy rains we have experienced.
So, we were forced to carry a big weight against the older male horses, in order to find a race that gave us a natural progression. The race at Canberra appeared the most sensible option and
Ottilie did the rest,
despite making things difficult from the wide barrier draw when
she missed the start.
However, even before that
conundrum, there was
a sensation at the track when the person tasked with saddling up
Ottilie "simply forgot and didn’t turn up to collect the saddle" from the weighing room as required. This caused a panic as
Ottilie at that stage was the
odds-on favourite and the stewards were scrambling to find a representative. Finally, this mess was sorted out, but as a result
Ottilie was late into the parade ring and was cantered into the ring by the Clark of the course, which
unnecessarily stirred up our filly pre-race.
Punters were aware what was happening, and
our filly blew from $1.85 to start at $2.70.
One of the last to load into the machine, as the gates crashed back,
Ottilie dwelt at the start to miss the kick half a length and came out second last at the jump, however
Brodie Loy pushed hard and in a matter of a dozen strides,
OTTILIE was three-deep but eyeballing the expected speed map leader Calmer Karmer who was on the fence, with Spats Pav Bowie pushing also up to hold Ottilie out three wide, in a charge for the lead.
The speed dropped as the past the 1100m, and by the time the field had worked to the 1000m mark,
Ottilie had forged to the lead and crossed down to the fence, as they approached the 800m peg at the top turn out of the back straight.
Passing the 800m, despite being required work harder than expected after missing the kick, Brodie was able to get
Ottilie to come back under him and settle into a comfortable rhythm, getting a nice breather without being pressured from the 800m to the 500m, where the field began their swing into the home straight.
As the field thundered around the home turn and balanced for the run home at the 400m, the challengers began their charge, but made no impression as
Ottilie dug in for the fight.
OTTILIE - Light on her feet!
Passing the 250m mark
Ottilie was still a comfortable length in front and in no danger. Those chasing could do no better, and for Brodie it was a simple case of keeping our filly going under her own steam without being challenged.
OTTILIE glides to victory!
Passing the 150m the margin had extended to 1.5 lengths and Brodie was able to allow
Ottilie (59.5kgs) to
idle down to a canter over the final 50m to record a soft but widening 1.84 length winning margin over $3.90 second favourite Calmer Karmer (58kgs) with Spats Pav Bowie (61kgs) ($8) a short half head further back in third spot.
Brodie Loy & Ottilie Returning To The Winner's Circle!
The punters got it wrong in this race much to the joy of
Ottilie owners as our 3yo filly opened at $1.85 and blew in betting to $3.00 late before a final tighten to start at the luxury price of $2.70.
OTTILIE in the Winner's Circle!

current 3yo’s.

35 runners in Australia for
12 Individual Winners.
Ottilie is the first of his progeny to have won 2 races, the other

won just one race each.
Ottilie is living up to her racing name which has two meanings: “Prosperous in Battle / Riches and Wealth”
