The moment of truth to determine if the marketing hype matches the reality. After decades of being introduced to a barrage of Northern Hemisphere "Champions" to go to stud in the Southern Hemisphere, our market has become a little desensitised to the noise.

Coolmore Stud are a prime example, where our sector of the thoroughbred breeding industry has not taken seriously enough, the outstanding racetrack performances and the introduction of new bloodlines, that can improve our breed.

However, whilst it seems a lucky dip for many breeders and buyers, it’s not a “black-magic” art as it may seem.

Stats prove genetically what works and exposes what is only average to below average success.

Once you identify the correct cross to support, then speed always works. The faster the better in Australia – no matter the distance – as our Australian bloodlines can add the strength from our tough Southern Hemisphere sprinting lines.

JUSTIFY - AUSTRALIA'S Champion First Season Sire elect

Australia’s Leading First Crop Sire in 2022-23 is Coolmore’s JUSTIFY (USA).

He was not loved by the Australian breeding industry and only has low foal crop numbers and then, when he struck gold with his first crop in the USA, he was considered too valuable to be returned to Australia last season. Now he is on his way back to Australia having missed that vital year.

Well, it certainly appears history may be repeating itself with the Irish juggernaut breeding operation.

Standing his first season at a Fee of only €10,000, CALYX (GB) (KINGMAN ex HELLEBORINE) to be fair received a moderate book of mares in the Northern Hemisphere in comparison to his peers on the stallion roster at Coolmore. He was added to the roster to support the lower tier sector of the industry to have access to an affordable sire.

Now he is the Number 1 First Crop Sire in Europe to start the season.

•   Grand Son Of Calyx - bolted up by 4 lengths in a Saint-Cloud maiden for Gianluca Bietolini who commented "His sire Calyx has made a very good start as a stallion! I like this colt a lot, he’s very professional and has good acceleration… he will be aimed at the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-Gr.1"

•   Nellie Leylax - flew home for an impressive winning debut in the 5f Maiden at Beverley for Tom Dascombe. "an amazing performance" The Racing Post

•   Malc - justified favouritism to win a novices stakes over 5f. at Carlisle on debut for Richard Fahey. "changed hands for 140,000gns at the Tatts Craven Breeze-Up the previous month, was strongest in the market and ran out a most stylish winner." Racing Post

He was not rushed by Australian breeders.

When Coolmore shuttled the sire to Australia for his first two season (oldest in Australia are yearlings) as the Fastest Son of Super sire of KINGMAN, but Calyx lacked marketing and therefore penetration with our breeders.

IN AUSTRALIA, he stood at Coolmore for a Service Fee of just $17,600 ($16,000 + GST) and produced a crop of only 44 Live Foals (19 fillies / 25 colts).

His oldest Southern Hemisphere crop are current yearlings.

From the 44 live foals, he had only 8 yearlings sell, achieving prices up to $230,000, $180,000, etc with an average of $96,875 (5.5 x Service Fee) and Median of $75,000 (4.3 x Service Fee).

None, Zero (0), Zip, of these 8 YEARLINGS to sell were from the Five (5) STAKES WINNING mares he covered.
