Dynamic Duo training partnership
CIARON MAHER and DAVID EUSTACE kept the winners flowing for their owners on
Day 2 of
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS at Royal Randwick and in the process displayed their horse husbandry and training skills and versatility by being able to claim the
PERCY SYKES Stakes being the feature 2yo event with
AWAY GAME and then claimed the feature Staying event the
SYDNEY CUP with
ETAH JAMES.
ANOTHER BIG WIN fOR AWAY GAME
Super filly
Away Game (Snitzel) stamped herself as one of the best two-year-olds of the season, winning her fourth race this campaign in the $500,000 Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes over 1200 metres at Randwick on Saturday.
Ridden by Glen Boss, the
Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner scooted clear in the home straight to defeat the
Gai and Adrian trained Vangelic (Vancouver) by a length and a half with
See You Soon (Siyouni) a further length and a quarter back in third.
Away Game does not have a Group One win to her name(yet) but jockey Glen Boss has given her his vote to be named champion juvenile after a classy Randwick victory.
AWAY GAME winning the Heineken 3 Percy Sykes Stakes.
If Magic Millions Winner AWAY GAME is not the best two-year-old in training, she can lay claim to being the toughest.
Since making her debut in November, the filly has raced in three states winning the Magic Millions at the Gold Coast, finishing fourth in the Blue Diamond Stakes in Melbourne and runner-up in the Golden Slipper.
Away Game was at it again in the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday, stamping her class with a commanding 1-1/2 length win Vangelic with See You Soon another 1-1/4 lengths away.
Glen Boss has ridden the Ciaron Maher And David Eustace-trained filly at her past two starts and says she deserves to be crowned champion juvenile despite not winning a Group One.
"I'm confident she just put her hand up for two-year-old of the year just there," Boss said.
"She has just done an incredible job.
"I said to Ciaron when I rode her on Tuesday that you just loving being on her back because she has so much enthusiasm and life.
"She's a good filly to be on and her record is second to none now so I dare say she will get a lot of votes for two-year-old of the year."
Annabel Neasham, who runs the Sydney arm of the Maher and Eustace operation, is in awe of Away Game's fortitude and ability to cope with whatever is thrown at her.
"She has been unbelievable. I think she has run every month since November," Neasham said.
"We were pretty confident she was coming in today as good as she was for the Slipper but there was a bit of a query on whether she'd handle the track.
"She's just so tough."
Away Game trailed the speed, pushing out into the clear and quickly asserting her authority to put the race in the bag.
Neasham revealed the filly was sent for a spell after the Slipper but did so well she was put back into work.
"We put her in the paddock for a week out at (retired trainer) Peter Nestor's and he just kept ringing me saying she needs to come back in, she is flying," Neasham said
"She is just a bonny filly and loves being in work and I can't wait until she turns into a three-year-old."
ETAH JAMES WINS SYDNEY CUP
Joining the team after an Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) tilt,
New Zealand-bred mare ETAH JAMES (Raise The Flag) took out the
Group 1 Sydney Cup under a near-perfect ride by
Glen Boss.
Having been transferred by her owners from trainer Matt Cumani to Ciaron and David, the reigning Pakenham Cup winner settled midfield during the run before looming up to the front runners approaching the final turn.
She was three-wide around the bend and hit the front with 200 metres to go, battling home to defeat another Kiwi The Chosen One (Savabeel) by a neck with British import Raheen House (Sea The Stars) a further half-length back in third.
"I've been riding it work and I trialled her here in a very fast trial and I said, 'this is just flying this thing'," Boss said.
"Its work on Tuesday was exceptional actually and I said to Ciaron this morning, this will be the best 30-1 shot I'll ever ride in a Group 1 race.
"I wasn't expecting to beat the English horse to be really honest but I was expecting to run one, two, three."
"Most of them were off the bridle and chasing at the 600 and mine was still coming up underneath me and I thought, I'm going to run very well.
"It's testing conditions. I don't think we broke 39 for the last 600, it was very slow."
Co-trainer Ciaron Maher, who was unable to attend the meeting in Sydney, said:
“She is a genuine two-miler.”
"When they get down to those weights over trips like that, anything is possible.
"Glen is in elite form and gave her a peach of a ride, and it came down to a head margin
"She was ridden perfectly and everything panned out the right way."
Just how well are the MAHER / EUSTACE combination going?
