Coming into Sunday’s TAB Ladies’ Day Benchmark 66 over 1500m at Muswellbrook off the back of two lackluster runs, the
return of blinkers to Dynamic Mare COURU (All Too Hard x Pas De Deux) transformed our 5yo mare’s confidence from just a competitor back into a
Winner, when under a brilliantly judged ride by jockey
Ben Looker, the
Dynamic Duo led the field a merry-dance, leading from start to finish and never looking in danger when claiming Race 3 on a Heavy 8 Track, in a time of 1:32.97 with a last 600m in 34.74.
COURU defeated the Kris Lees trained duo PREDICTABLE MISS by 1.34 lengths with MEYER back in third.
COURU took her race record to now
14 Starts: 4 Wins, 1 Second and $60,355.
She is a Winner of races at 1300m (2), 1400m and now 1500m.
It was a
tough win for an out of form mare, being asked to (a) carry 59.0kgs top-weight, (b) on a Heavy Track, (c) second-up, and with the gloom of (d) her 13 previous starts having only shown performances on hard ground where the three efforts on rain affected tracks resulting in 3 duck eggs.
So, our confidence wasn’t high on a Heavy track.
However,
the ride was judged to perfection.
Jumping quickly
Ben speared COURU to the lead from barrier 6 in the field of 8 and the mare was
full of running to string them along after 200m and settle two lengths clear of the eventual runner-up and third placegetter.
Ben was able to get
COURU to settle and give she gave him a kind ride wilt the chasers just left us alone in front where he stole the race.
For the next 3 sectionals (600m) Ben was able to peel off a
12.52, 12.75, 12.78 which was
far slower than average time, turning the race into a sit and sprint, so approaching the home turn Ben asked
COURU to extend and she dashed 3 lengths in front, peeling off a
11.84 and a
11.35 (fastest of the race) which made it mathematically impossible for this grade of horse that were chasing on a waterlogged surface to pick her up allowing her to ease up the final 50m when still recording a
11.87 split. In fact, no horse made any impression as
COURU kept rolling and delivered a stunning return to form.
COURU is a much better horse with blinkers on and
Adam Watt from
Dynamic
insisted with the stable they be
re-applied and it proved a masterstroke.
Add in the
brilliant ride, it made it a
one act affair.
Also,
Adam’s booking of Ben Looker was another coup, as the talented hoop out-thought his rivals.
So, this win was about management and planning meeting with ability to produce the result.
