CURDLED - a son of ALL TOO HARD ex Custard (by Lonhro) has become his sire’s First Stakes Winner after breaking through for a well-deserved win at Doomben on Saturday and his jockey Jim Byrne believes the best is yet to come.
Segenhoe Thoroughbreds CURDLED chose the right spot to break his maiden when scoring in the Winning Edge Stakes Listed Race (1350m) to supply Vinery Stud's All Too Hard with his first stakes-winner.
Placed in four of his previous five starts, Curdled finally had some overdue luck go his way.
Curdled advances his overall record to 6 starts = 1 win, 3 seconds and 1 third with earnings of $88,850.
Ridden by Jim Byrne for Randwick-based trainer Peter Robl, Curdled found a spot midfield from a wide barrier.
On his inside was Marseille En Fleur and the two came wide on the turn to make their runs.
The pair staged a two-horse war down the straight with Curdled getting the bob by a nose from Marseille En Fleur (Swiss Ace) with Guissola (Poets Voice) one and a quarter lengths back in third.
Curdled was well supported when backed from $8.50 into $6.
Byrne said Curdled still had plenty to learn.
"He doesn't know how to attack the line yet," Byrne said.
"I wouldn't say he dug the toes in but in the last 50 metres, he more or less just wanted to observe the other horses.
"He wasn't really attacking the line the way he should but he'll learn from it and should make a nice horse when he understands what racing is all about."
Bill Mitchell, representing trainer Peter Robl, said Curdled would be spelled following Saturday's win.
"He's a progressive horse who should develop into a better three-year-old than two-year-old and we'll put him away and look for the right races next season," Mitchell said.
Originally sold for $300,000 to Shadwell Stud at the 2016 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Curdled failed a post-sale endoscope test and the sale was cancelled so the yearling was retained to race by Segenhoe.
