Further to that story, on Wednesday a positive announcement has filtered into the market for Southern Hemisphere breeders and buyers via Breednet.com that the highly promising and instantly successful young sire ALMANZOR (FR) (by Wootton Bassett) has been purchased outright and be permanently based in New Zealand at Cambridge Stud and will no longer be shuttling between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

Cambridge Stud have acquired the full breeding rights to the Champion son of Wootton Bassett, who has sired 19 stakes-winners, 12 of them in Australasia, headed by Group 1 winners Manzoice and Circle of Fire.

ALMANZOR (FR) eldest progeny in the Southern Hemisphere have just turned 4yo’s and already the NZ Breeders are making comparisons that at the same stage of their careers that ALMANZOR is more successful than the legendary ZABEEL.
French based stud farm Haras d'Etreham's executive director Nicolas de Chambure said in a statement on Tuesday: “We have experienced an emotional ride with ALMANZOR, and he has been the symbol of a new dynamic within the stud, both from a breeding and stallion perspective.
“His victory in the 2016 Prix du Jockey Club represented a major exploit and a great joy for the whole Etreham team. A magnificent individual, he immediately appealed to Jean-Claude Rouget who purchased him as a yearling for more than 16 times the stud fee of his sires.
"Thanks to his exceptional performances, ALMANZOR remains the best son of Wootton Bassett.
"After six seasons of shuttling, it is logical for us to accept the offer from Cambridge Stud, which will allow the stallion to remain in the hemisphere where he is the most successful.
"We wish them continued success for the future, and we would like to express our thanks to all the shareholders and breeders who have supported Almanzor during his covering seasons at Etreham.”
Standing at a fee of $30,000 NZD this spring, ALMANZOR sired a stakes quinella at Caulfield last Saturday with Rise at Dawn and Positivity running one/two in the Listed MRC Heatherlie Stakes.
Whilst in NZ on Wednesday promising mare Lux Libertas has won her third race in a row from her five starts and appears to be the sire’s next stakes winner in waiting.
This weekend ALMANZOR stakes Winners MANZOICE contests the Wyong Cup LR 2100m on Friday and ATHABASCAN contests the Gr2 Chelmsford 1600m as they prepare foundations for the big staying events in the Spring.
WOOTTON BASSETT - the sire of ALMANZOR will be standing at Coolmore Stud this season at a Fee of $192,500.
