Dynamic Trainer CIARON MAHER and his Warwick Farm based team lead by Johann Gerard-Duboard (Aussie Joh) had presented our dynamic filly UP TO MISCHIEF (3yo Written Tycoon x More Mischievous) for a debut victory at Canberra on 20 October, and the filly let her ownership team know she had ability and was capable of more wins in the future.
UP TO MISCHIEF winning on debut at Canberra
Back then she was still immature and would benefit greatly from a little more time to strengthen into her perfect frame.
So UP TO MISCHIEF was sent back to the paddock, having shown that she would be worth the wait.
She came back into work and had two soft trials to prepare her for a first-up assignment back at the sport.
On Easter Sunday UP TO MISCHIEF was nominated for a Benchmark 58 1100m race at Nowra and a Class 1, 1100m race at Mudgee with a view of doing our form after acceptances and barrier draws, to identify the right race in which to head back to competition.
We drew the carpark in both events, so after a review of the raceform, Team Dynamic believed she was best placed at Mudgee. Despite being a tricky circuit layout and there being a lot of pace in the event, we considered that a Class 1 event rather than a Benchmark 58 was more suitable. Also, we identified that the leaders would more likely stop upon straightening, so we would swoop past them and running-on from the top of the straight, attack the line. This gave us the best opportunity to win for her terrific ownership team.
So, on Easter Saturday afternoon, we called Ciaron’s Warwick Farm lead foreman Johann Gerard-Duboard (Aussie Joh) and advised to put her on the truck to Mudgee and our Dynamic Filly didn’t let her supporters down when eased-up to score by a widening 2.14 lengths as the camera flashed.
UP TO MISCHIEF winning at Mudgee
UP TO MISCHIEF won race 2, the Ronnie & Family Barber Shop Class 1 Handicap over 1100m at Mudgee, defeating runner-up Serifice (55.0kgs) with Gucci Slippers (52.0kgs) finishing 3.05 lengths away in third.
Ridden by our Dynamic Team Rider Ash Morgan, the event looked on paper to be an easily winnable race, and accordingly our filly was smashed in betting. Opening at $2.80 second favourite, she was supported every call, being crunched into a $1.90 favourite as the original top weight and favourite Goonoo had blown in betting from $2.20 to $2.80 by the time the field loaded.
Then the race became a one act affair as Goonoo was scratched behind the barriers on Stewards advice.
That saw UP TO MISCHIEF crunched in further as the second favourite came out of the betting, firming from $1.90 to $1.30 favourite as the gates flung back.
As anticipated, there was a lot of early pace underneath us, and UP TO MISCHIEF had jumped cleanly and rolled forward, which had she stayed there, she would be trapped 4-deep without cover, on the constantly turning track layout.
Riding to instruction, Ash took hold of our filly and allowed her to drift 3 pairs, to settle in the running line one off the fence, 3 pairs back, saving ground and energy until the 500m when Ash popped out 3-deep to improve as the field began to swing into the home straight.
As UP TO MISCHIEF
balanced-up at the top of the lane, she was now out 4-deep, two lengths
off the leader and eventual runner-up Serifice (55.0kgs).
Allowed her head by Ash at the 250m, UP TO MISCHIEF ambled-up to eyeball the leader and in a blink, strode-on past without being under any pressure.
Ash pushed the “go-button” at the 200m, and our filly dashed away putting a 3-length gap into the chasing pack.
Our filly was full of running at the 100m, so Ash dropped his hands and allowed UP TO MISCHIEF to stroll to the post for a very comfortable, armchair ride as the camera flashed.
JOB DONE!
Whilst our 3yo filly is now 2 Starts = 2 Wins.
UP TO MISCHIEF still has racing education to come, however she has obvious talent, and her fitness levels will improve after this foundation race effort. So, as we raise the bar, we are confident UP TO MISCHIEF will continue to advance on her promising start to her racing career.
This event was not much more than a barrier trial for money and UP TO MISCHIEF won with such authority she would have done the same amount of exercise at home just doing morning trackwork.
Importantly for her Dynamic Owners, they now have two photos for the wall, and their first prize cheque of $13,950 has paid for this preparation and the balance of the preparation ahead offers them terrific opportunities to build their bank account.
