The first race of the new 2017/18 Racing Season conducted at Cessnock by the Newcastle Jockey Club was
Won by Dynamic Stayer MAGENTAZ for trainer Gerald Ryan and jockey Christian Reith.
There is not a better way to start the new racing year than as a winner !
MAGENTAZ had been scratched from Gosford on Saturday and saved for Tuesday at Cessnock to race in the IGA Liquor Class 1 & Maiden Plate over 2125m and it proved to be the right decision.
MAGENTAZ (Redoute’s Choice x Zapurple) carried 59.0kgs and won eased right down to defeat Ultimate Decision by 1.75 lens x with Terrigal 2.75 lens back in third. They ran 2:11.70 on a Good 3 surface.
Having drawn barrier 10 of 10,
Christian Reith was instructed to push forward and attempt to get across towards the lead.
Unfortunately it was a bit of a roughhouse affair at the first turn as the horse drawn underneath us in barrier 9 also went forward and then wanted to hang out towards the centre of the track
forcing Christian wide on Magentaz. As they swung out of the home straight Christian was able pull back and slot in beautifully tracking the leader who then locked his jaw and wanted to run off the track
causing Christian to have to check on Magentaz and upset his rhythm.
As a result this left
MAGENTAZ in front as they entered the back straight and our horse was able to balance up and put in steady sectionals from the 1800m to the 600m. The field was well strung out behind our horse at this stage and the race was already over.
Christian kept MAGENTAZ under a hold to the 400m and then pushed the go button and the pair zoomed away opening up a 4 length lead with 150m to run. Christian took a peak over his shoulder and saw there was nothing coming so with about 50 metres remaining, he allowed MAGENTAZ to canter to the line without urging.
It was a terrific ride by Christian Reith who is in fantastic form.
Credit goes to trainer Gerald Ryan and his team for freshening up Magentaz so well and having the horse race so consistently.
MAGENTAZ had been up for a while and racing well without luck, so Gerald gave the horse
31 days between runs and had been
schooling MAGENTAZ over the fences at Rosehill which switched the horse on mentally. His work was sensational leading into the race and the stable was very confident.
MAGENTAZ raced as good as he looked and the horse won well. Incredibly the horse drifted late to $3.70 before being crunched into $2.90 at the start.
