Trainer Jason Deamer – “Take a Bow” – What a tremendous piece of horse husbandry you have delivered for your Dynamic Syndications Ownership Team that race AWESOME TYCOON (4yo geld Written Tycoon x Sensible Lady) after a hard fought but courageous win in a fast tempo race on a Soft 7 surface at Taree on Tuesday.
Ridden a “pearler” by jockey Ben Looker, despite being 5 weeks between race starts, up in trip 200m to a mile, and being the fifth run for this preparation which is also his fifth career start overall, AWESOME TYCOON ($4.80) carrying 59.0kgs defeated $2.80 favourite Santatime (55.5kgs) by 0.25 length, with Akauwheo ($6.50) (57.0kgs) 1.37 length third.
AWESOME TYCOON won Race 2 the MURRAY DOUST CLASS 1 & MAIDEN PLATE (1600m) on a Soft 7 track in a Time of: 1:37.85 with a Last 600m: 0:37.74.
It took AWESOME TYCOON the length of the straight to reel-in the leader and gain ascendancy, but AWESOME TYCOON showed toughness and determination having been presented to the track in magnificent order by our tremendous horse conditioner.
AWESOME TYCOON took his race career resume to: 5 Starts: 2-0-2-1 and $29,975 in earnings for the preparation.
In his 5 starts he finished third on debut, then won. He was at his next start, fourth at Newcastle, then third again before this win.
Having drawn off the track in barrier 10, our intention was to allow our horse as easy a time as possible by getting into a rhythm and bowling along until the point of the turn before extending under his big weight compared to that of his peers.
The favourite Santatime was our only pre-race concern. A last start winner 7 days earlier at the track and trip and he would be up on speed with a 3.5kg pull in the weights, however we still believed we had the class to overcome that, but we may be running out of gas over the final 50m.
The key was not to do too much early and allow him to work into the race.
What we had not expected was that the race would be run so quickly up front, and the field was spread out over more than 15 lengths mid race.
As the gates crashed back, Ben Looker was able to steer across, tucking in behind the early tempo, mid-field and got into the running line one off the fence, 3 pairs back, six lengths off the speed with cover, as they thundered past the 1200m marker.
Nothing really changed for the next 3 furlongs with the field breaking into two packs, with AWESOME TYCOON at the head of the second division still 6 lengths away.
From the 500m until the point of the home turn all runners started to make their moves, and AWESOME TYCOON was struggling to pick up the bit and travel as the field swung into the home straight. Still 3 lengths away at the 300m, AWESOME TYCOON was able to extract himself out of a pocket behind the leaders and move into the middle of the track to begin the chase to reel in the leaders.
Stride by stride he kept up his determination to win, reducing the margin with every effort and with full exertion of each muscle and sinew.
With 50m to run he reached the leader and eventual runner-up and then over the remaining strides, he dug deep under the urging of Ben Looker to forge his way to the front and as the camera flashed he had increased his margin to a quarter of a length win.
Post-race, Ben Looker was very complementary of the horse and his effort and advised that when the sprint came into the race, he was a touch flat footed but ground out a tough win and suggested that our horse was looking for potentially further where he could travel kindly and not have to sprint hard but rather, he could out stay his peers.
It was a tremendous bit of horse management and mentorship by horseman Jason Deamer matched by an excellently judged ride by Ben Looker.
