The
2021 Yearling Sale circuit has officially commenced, with Tuesday the 5th January being the first day of inspections at the
Magic Millions Sales Complex on the Gold Coast, ahead of their sale which kicks-off at Midday Tuesday 12th January and runs through for seven (7) days of selling to conclude on Monday 18th January.
There are
1273 lots in this year’s Magic Millions Sale Catalogue.
To ensure
Dynamic Syndications would be represented at the complex,
Adam Watt went to Queensland on Friday 18th December to make sure he was safely across the boarder in case there were COVID restrictions put in place.
This turned out to be a masterstroke with the subsequent Sydney Northern Beaches outbreak forcing boarder restrictions upon everyone from the greater Sydney region.
Whilst
our contracted veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts has been based in Melbourne for the past few months, so he has also avoided the Sydney restrictions and fly’s into the Gold Coast directly from Melbourne.

Adam got our inspections underway, viewing the drafts of ten (10) farms that were showing their yearlings on Day 1.
Already he has inspected the drafts from leading vendors:
Edinburgh Park, Wingham, NSW,
Gooree Park Stud, Mudgee, NSW
Bhima Thoroughbreds, Scone, NSW
Yulong Investments, Nagambie, Vic
Kingstar Farm, Denman, NSW
Milburn Creek, Wildes Meadow, NSW
Parsons Creek Pastoral Co, Milbrodale, NSW
Bowness Stud, Young, NSW
Rothwell Park Thoroughbreds, Blandford, NSW
KBL Thoroughbreds, Beaudesert, Qld
Day 2 is scheduled to see an
additional 35 farms commence parading their yearlings.
Amongst them are the big hitting nurseries:
Arrowfield, Baramul, Coolmore, Eureka, Lyndhurst, Newhaven, Rosemount, Segenhoe, Sledmere, Vinery, Waikato, Westbury, along with leading boutique operations
Emirates, Lime Country, Glastonbury, etc.
The Team at Dynamic having been working on the catalogue for several weeks ahead of this sale analysing every pedigree based upon factors of genetics, commerciality and propensity to produce either 2yo speed of 3yo classic contenders.
Now the hard work is to be undertaken by viewing each individual on our list of
over 300 lots that have
met our strict selection criteria, and critiquing each lot to identify the well conformed, athletic individuals with good size and scope to help us
identify tomorrow’s champion today.
Once we have seen our initial list and we have removed horses that on type have not met our criteria, we head back with our veterinarian Dr Tim Roberts for our second round inspections, to ensure each horse on our shortlist will pass his stringent veterinary inspection.

Those that pass their physical inspection remain on our list and then Dr Roberts heads into the X-Ray repository to view a set of 42 X-Rays supplied for each lot.
We regularly loose a few lots off our list at this stage, where injury, developmental or structural issues are identified. We have a golden rule –
"if in doubt rule it out." Any concern about any X-Ray the horse is removed from our list.
If the horse passes this X-Ray inspection, then a pre-sale review of the endoscopic report is examined to ensure the horse is considered clean-winded (no throat issues to affect its breathing ability under pressure).
Once a yearling has survived its Physical Inspection, X-Rays and Scope report, our final list is determined.
Dr Tim Roberts & Dean Watt
At this stage,
Dynamic Syndications Managing Director Dean Watt whom is a
Member of the Bloodstock Agents Federation of Australia, and
qualified to give
Market Appraisals as to the value of thoroughbreds, sits down with the list and
determines their true commercial value, based upon
many factors that make up their market appraisal calculations.
Dean is an expert in this field and can readily determine a ceiling price he is willing to set for each lot and records that to ensure the Dynamic Team know their upper limit prior to the entry of each lot into the salering.
Its easy to buy a horse, just keep sticking your hand up until you’re the last man standing.
However, that’s also the quickest way to the poor house because like cars and bricks and mortar, each horse has a defined value and the art of our business is to know what that is and never pay over their true values for any horse.
Each sale we see the same buyer mistakes happen over and over again.
Take out the ego driven decisions and have a disciplined commercial strategy set in place. This minimises any opportunity of errors in the heat of the auction battle.
Some of the many variables that affect the appraisal value of a thoroughbred include:
(1) The Size, Scope and Athleticism of the Individual Horse, (2) Foaling Date, (3) Number of Foals the Mare has already Produced (4) Race History of Siblings, (6) Service Fee of the Sire, (7) Commercial Appeal of the Pedigree Page, (8) Black-Type success of the female family, (9) Genetic Balance of the Pedigree, (10) The Yearling Sale’s Pecking Order (Ranking) in the marketplace, (11) Economic and Political factors, (12) Public Health concerns impacting a sale, (12) Sales History of Siblings, the Mare, and Close Relations, (13) Sale Averages achieved previously by the Sire at (a) Similar Yearling Sales, (b) Similar Commercial Pedigrees (14) Combined Age of Sire and Age of Mare (15) First Crop Sire, verse Proven Sire verse Unproven or Unpopular Sire. (16) and many more variables are added into the equation.
With a proven formula to value the commercial appraisal of every lot, this eliminates the possibility of every paying too much for any horse which ensures the maximum opportunity of a positive return on initial investment.
Its this volume of work that puts DYNAMIC SYNDICATIONS ahead of our field.
