At Muswellbrook on public holiday Monday 4 October,
Dynamic Syndications 4yo mare
ZOU DE MOON (Zoustar x Moon De French) resumed from a spell over 1280m, in a Class 2 event, although our mare was eligible for an easier Class 1 grade.
After her recent spell,
ZOU DE MOON was transferred to the stables of
trainer
Jason Deamer at Newcastle and our mare was presented at her first start back to the track, looking a million dollars for her resumption run and raced accordingly, to claim Race 6 on the programme, the
RAP Surveying Class 2 1280m Handicap on a Soft 5 surface.
ZOU DE MOON showed her class with a determined win that took her career record to
4 starts: 2-1-0 and $40,405
With a howling westerly headwind in the home straight, they ran 1:16.04 with a last 600m of 35.74.
Starting a $4.00 equal favourite,
ZOU DE MOON defeated Oakfield Navajo ($4.00 equal favourite) by
0.67 length with Titan Star ($17) finishing
1.23 lengths third.
With 10 minutes to go,
ZOU DE MOON was a clear $2.50 favourite with Oakfield Navajo a $6.50 second favourite, but a huge move for Oakfield Navajo saw it tighten in, and as a result
ZOU DE MOON blew to $4.00. This was
“money for jam” as our mare was never going to get beaten despite a determined effort by the plunge horse.
This win represented a masterful piece of horse husbandry and training from Jason Deamer who had to learn about our mare, and present her fit enough to be competitive first-up, over 1280m off just one easy barrier trial, and take on a grade above what she was eligible to run in.
The purpose of running in a Class 2 over a Class 1 was to allow our mare to
receive weight relief for racing out of her grade.
With mares, higher weights are often a struggle, and being only 85% fit with plenty of improvement to come, along with knowing that our mare will appreciate a trip out to a mile or further as she has the classical build of a middle-distance galloper with a pedigree to match, dropping in weight would be a significant advantage for
ZOU DE MOON when resuming.
Adam Watt at Dynamic Syndications mapped out the perfect programme for Jason to follow which resulted in
ZOU DE MOON being as ready as humanly possible for her first up run, instead of having a second barrier trial.
Aided by an excellent ride from our
“go-to” team member and jet pilot
Christian Reith, we claimed another win for her pedigree page and banked
$12,280 first prize, instead of having the second barrier trial and now our valuable mare is the winner of two races at 1100m and 1280m.
Christian has ridden ZOU DE MOON in 3 of her 4 race starts for 2 wins (Nowra and Muswellbrook) and an unlucky second when runner-up by a Head at Newcastle to the talented Azarmin - a winner of 5 races.
Sky Central TV presenter Gary Harley spoke about our mare in the pre-race parade saying:
“Hard to assess, but on its best will win. Won at Nowra before Christmas, won easy. Went to Newcastle in a very strong Benchmark 64 and got beat a head by Azarmin. Since, been transferred to Jason Deamer. In the Dynamic Colours and it trialled nicely at Scone behind Safano who is a class runner.”
Jason Deamer was then interviewed pre-race by Gary Harley.
Gary Harley said to Jason:
“I liked the trial up here at Scone the other day.”
Jason Deamer replied:
“Yeah just a nice little trial for her, just a day out, obviously the track was much wetter than what it is here today, and she should appreciate the firmer surface here. She’s been ticking over nicely since that hit out.”
Gary Harley aserted:
“Nothing wrong with her raceform, she won at Nowra first-up and the Newcastle run when she got beaten a head by Azarmin would win this race.”
Jason responded:
“Yeah definitely. I’m not sure what happened after that, she had a trial and a race and a break before coming to me, since she arrived here, obviously she arrived in great condition from the Waterhouse Bott team, she’s been ticking over nicely, and this looks an ideal race for her.”
Gary then said:
“I noticed in the trial she came out running, didn’t she!”
Jason replied:
“Yeah, you expect that from where she came from, and Christian will use that to her advantage today, and be somewhere in the first three or four.”
Gary chimed in with:
“Another one of the Dynamic Syndications horses you have got. You’ve had so much success with them, how many have you got in work at the moment?”
Jason answered:
“We’ve got 15 there, we’ve usually got about 15 of them there, so it’s really come along very well since our first horse. They gave me - Decroux about two years ago and we had a lot of success with him, and its continued to grow since then, and as you saw on Saturday, this year they gave me a go with a couple of yearlings, and the first one of those ran on Saturday, he ran very well, he ran fourth in the Breeders Plate, he only got beat just over a length and a half so, I couldn’t be happier. You know; they gave me a nice horse and I kept up my end of the deal and got him to the track for them.”
Gary then stated:
“You’ve always had good riders, but you got a lucky break when Christian Reith came to town.”
Jason confirmed:
“Yes definitely, he’s always been a part of the Dynamic Team, and now that he is based up this way, he comes in at least twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday, and he’s a big part of the team and it’s great when he can get a feel of them at trackwork.
“Even the ones that are new to me, he’s probably ridden them before, like this one today, he knows her anyway from previous rides with the other stable and he’s a big help and even that two-year-old on Saturday, he rode him at track work a few times and gave us a very good opinion of him, so he’s great to have as part of our team.”
As the gates flung back and the field jumped away,
ZOU DE MOON was a touch slow to gain pace, that saw her settle a length behind several horses that had hit the ground running, including the plunge horse who had barrier 1 and had flown the lids to lead on the paint.
Settling in 7th spot after the first 50m, Christian knew he wanted to be up on pace and leading if he could, so was working overtime to drive our mare forward, which was using valuable early petrol to get into that forward position.
After the first furlong,
ZOU DE MOON got to the lead but was trapped 3 deep, so Christian kept up the forward trajectory and kept working to cross to the lead passing by the 1000m marker.
Titan Star who was to our outside, decided it wanted to be a pest and drove forward to eyeball
ZOU DE MOON passing the 950m, as it was trying to cross us.
Christian was too smart for that, and kept
ZOU DE MOON working forward, which made Titan Star work overtime to get to the front, as they passed the 900m.
Whilst this was unfolding, plunge horse Oakfield Navajo was taking the sit, one pair back on the fence, watching it unfold and not spending a penny.
Once Titan Star worked to a 3/4 length lead, Christian grabbed hold of
ZOU DE MOON and got her to settle into a rhythm and have a breather, since she had worked so hard early.
Titan Star was now over-racing, whilst Christian had a strong hold on our mare, two lengths off the leader, with 1½ lengths back to Oakfield Navajo tracking the tempo in third spot.
Passing the 600m, Christian angled off the fence to be in the running line, and to ensure he wasn’t pocketed as the field began to bunch-up approaching the home turn.
As the field balanced into the straight and passing the 350m point, Christian allowed
ZOU DE MOON to go up on the outside and eyeball the leader, as Oakfield Navajo improved to the inside of that runner.
At the 200m Oakfield Navajo, who had an easier time throughout, went up and hit the front and got a length in advance of our mare.
However, class, ability, pedigree, and horsemanship all kicked-in, and despite the hard early work,
ZOU DE MOON responded to the urgings of Christian and found another gear, reeling-in the leader with 75 metres to run and went on past to record a determined and widening 0.67 length win.
Tuesday morning our mare was in excellent condition. Jason sent a video through to the owners showing
ZOU DE MOON out in a yard, with the sun on her back and with some nice fresh green pick as a reward for efforts.
Jason reported that she was having an easy day after a huge effort. She had to be made to get into a forward position and he thought she was going to run a good second but was delighted when she fought back hard and was too good for them going away on the line.
Jason reported that Christian always thought that he had them covered, it’s just that it took her a bit to wind-up and hit top gear. Jason was right, it was a huge effort.
She still has a bit of condition there, she’s not tucked up and she has come through the run in good order.
