It’s hard to win a race anywhere, especially on debut, so
it's exciting when you have a beautifully bred 3yo filly go to the sport and burn her peers with pure speed over a trip that is well short of what her pedigree and conformation suggests she will excel at.
ZOU DE MOON is a 3yo Bay Filly by ZOUSTAR from MOON DE FRENCH (USA).
Purchased by Dynamic Syndications at the Magic Millions from the draft of leading Hunter Valley Nursery NEWGATE FARM, our GAI WATERHOUSE and ADRIAN BOTT trained filly is owned by a wonderful team of Loyal Dynamic Syndications Owners.
ZOU DE MOON as a yearling
It had been our plan for 2 months leading into this event, to kick off the filly’s career on the Nowra track at their feature Showcase Cup raceday, where the prizemoney is stronger than normal, and the track surface would be at its best.
Importantly, we believed the long straight with its uphill gradient would be ideal to let our filly stretch out.
From our perspective, we believe our filly will be far batter at 1600m than she was ever going to be at the 1100m of this event, but we knew on exposed trackwork, class factors, and her trials, winning this event was well in her grasp.
It's wonderfully satisfying when a plan comes together, and the result is achieved.
A combination of a classy filly, with a huge black type pedigree, turned out in perfect order by her brilliant trainers, ridden to perfection by our
“go-to” jet pilot Christian Reith who gave her an 11 out of 10 ride, and importantly the right race at the right track all combined to produce a fantastic team result for our Dynamic Owners.
As the saying goes
“Teamwork makes the dreamwork.”
Sensationally supported in the ring,
ZOU DE MOON opened pre-race betting at $3.90 and was heavily supported into
$1.80 favourite.
Traditionally, Gai and Adrian like to have their horses bowl along upfront but on the day, there was a strong wind blowing and on paper some hectic speed engaged. So, it was felt that we should race with cover until the home turn, before presenting to run on.
The race panned out brilliantly.
ZOU DE MOON won Race 1 at Nowra, the 2ST & POWER FM Fillies and Mares SHOWCASE Maiden Plate over 1100m.
Because it was a Showcase Maiden plus
ZOU DE MOON is BOBS eligible, she picked up a total of
$20,725 for this debut win.
ZOU DE MOON with her ears pricked having fun !
As the gates crashed back, our filly jumped cleanly but took four strides to work it out, which had her half a length off a fast-early tempo. By the time the field had run 100m
ZOU DE MOON was in fourth spot, 3.5 lengths off the leader Amungee (eventual runner-up).
The leaders sped along between the 1000m and the 900m with Amungee setting a slick speed over Jolie Colleen and Miss Keira with ZOU DE MOON being kept honest a further 2 lengths back in 4th.
Then as the tempo started to ease between the 900m to the 800m, Christian rolled up to get the gun position in the one / one spot in fourth, a length and a half off the speed.
The field stayed in their positions until the 400m. As they swung into the home straight, Christian peeled out 3 deep to commence his attack.
Inexperience of racecraft as the field turned, saw
ZOU DE MOON become unbalanced as she hit the heavy headwind and it cost her momentum and overall, one length.
Christian got our filly balanced and then began to ride
ZOU DE MOON along to chase the leader, who had skipped 3 lengths in front.
As the field passed the 200m mark, Amungee was still 2 lengths in front and full of running whilst
ZOU DE MOON had now captured second place and was being ridden along to chase down the leader.
As they hit the 100m mark
ZOU DE MOON was still half a length off the leader, but we were sizzling home.
At the 50m we had drawn level under hands and heels with Amungee unable to rally and daylight back to third spot, the race was all over.
Christian was very kind on our filly over the last 50m, riding hands and heels and was able to roll to the post to score a widening one length win over Amungee with third spot eventually going to Miss Keira who finished 4.1 lengths away.
Return to scale a WINNER
ZOU DE MOON stopped the clock in a fast 1:03.51 secs run into a strong headwind, coming home eased down in 34.23 secs.
CHRISTIAN REITH & ZOU DE MOON
Our 3yo filly is now boasting some good residual value being a Winning daughter of
ZOUSTAR who as a sire has been doing a terrific job at stud, from the
Stakes Winning Gr1 placed MOON DE FRENCH (by Malibu Moon). She won 4 races between 1300m to 1700m and importantly she finished 3rd at Gr1 level to champion USA mare
Zenyatta at 1700m.
The big flashing lights about this filly are; she is certainly appealing and is at least city class and she;s from a pedigree which is free of Danehill blood, so can go to a wide range of stallions when her racing days conclude.
