BANG-BANG! It’s back-to-back victories in 7 days for improving 4yo JUMEIRAH BEACH as he made the leap from winning his maiden last time out on 25 November at Muswellbrook to claiming his second win when victorious at Mudgee on Friday 2 December.
JUMEIRAH BEACH an $80,000 Magic Millions Yearling Purchase, is a 4yo Bay Gelding (by Pride of Dubai x Vormista) trained by Richard & Will Freedman at Rosehill and was ridden by Aaron Bullock.
JUMEIRAH BEACH won the HAMILTON ISLAND CLASS 1 SHOWCASE HANDICAP (1400m) in a Time of 1:23.90. Backed as unbeatable when crunched from $2.30 into $1.55, only bad luck would play its part in seeing something else lob, however if you were writing a story about how things can go wrong in a race, then this event would be a best seller.
Absolutely nothing went right, but class shone through and prevailed, with a horse that has untapped ability levels but mentally is very much a work in progress.
In this event, he covered more ground than Bourke and Wills under a big weight but still scored a soft win, but it was only with 50m to run could his supporters breathe easier. Slowly but surely the penny is dropping, as his parade manners and his racecraft was significantly better today than it was last start, and far better than two runs back where he threw the race away at Hawkesbury and was forced back to the trials by the stewards.
Off the back of an awesome win by 4.21 lengths last time out, he was well into a race like this however, he still needed to come to the sport and produce in a seven-day turnaround.
Tactically we wanted to be forward and lead or trail the leader, out of trouble with the top weight of 60.0kgs but the race didn’t pan out that way.
Far more sensible and relaxed behind the gates and standing inside waiting for the gates to fling back, as the gates crashed open, it was a beautiful start as the field skipped away as one.
Then there was some pressure applied as Starane (barrier 9), Cirebon (barrier 4) and Shubick (barrier 1) kicked up and set a slick early furlong. This left our horse a little flat footed, whilst the second favourite Blue Guitar (barrier 5) was content to sit inside us, forcing Aaron Bullock and JUMEIRAH BEACH to be trapped 3 deep.
Passing the 1200m mark, JUMEIRAH BEACH was drifting backwards and settled third last in a tightly packed field.
Aaron tried to improve as the field thundered toward the top turn with 1000m to run, and whilst 3 deep, he did have cover at that point.
Passing the 700m the horse Starane who had earlier given us cover, was able to slot in to be at the girth of the leader, leaving us 3 deep facing the breeze.
At this point Maslina swept around us to give us a trail, but it didn’t have the speed or class to stay there and became more like a speed hump that a help.
Passing the 600m Aaron knew he had a lap full of horse but was trapped wide with a tiring horse in front, yielding back into his lap. This flushed JUMEIRAH BEACH 4 deep, to keep flowing with momentum but tracking a very wide course.
As the pressure came on approaching the swing into the straight, Aaron kept our big and gawky athlete in his own rhythm, as they balanced for the run home. They swung into the straight 5-deep and close to the outside paint.
Passing the 400m, the leader had a 2-length advantage and went for home giving us plenty to chase passing the 250m.
Its here that his class shown through. Running down the outside of the track, our Dynamic Duo set out to chase down the leader who was full of running.
Passing the 100m JUMEIRAH BEACH had captured the leader and with stride by stride, built a winning margin. There were no excuses for the beaten brigade. They simply lacked the type and pedigree to challenge.
Passing the 50m, Aaron took the front and allowed to roll to the post, the Dynamic Duo posted a ¾ length margin.
JOB DONE!
Sky Channel’s Richard Callendar said: “Yeah, good ride, good win there too, yeah very good win. Aaron Bullock he never panicked, the leader tried to pinch it and kicked away, but Aaron Bullock got this big horse out. He looks a big gangly buggar with plenty to learn, but he stretches his neck in the right part and he goes home too good. JUMEIRAH BEACH the Winner – the favourite too good. All’s well that ends well.”
Mick Wallace from Sky then said: “Yeah it was a good effort there from JUMEIRAH BEACH, it was hard to tell whether he was travelling approaching the home corner, he’s a horse that wants to throw his head around a little bit and he’s got quite a high head carriage, he really knuckled down the final 50m, he’s going to get better and better as he steps out over more ground.”
Mick Wallace who had interviewed Adam Watt from Dynamic Syndications pre-race then caught up with Adam again post-race to discuss the win.
Mick said to Adam; “Well he got back into the ruck a little bit and Aaron Bullock was able to get him a little bit of cover 3 wide and he’s let down nicely.”
Adam responded: “Yes he certainly did. Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong, and my heart was in my mouth there at the 300m mark, but credit the second horse there, he was very tough and on his local track, he kicked clear, and our bloke really had to knuckle down and get there, but that’s why you put Aaron Bullock on.”
Mick then asked: “It still looks like he’s a bit of a work in progress, , he does a few things wrong.”
Adam stated: “Yes, as I said pre-race, mentally its still all coming but ability wise its there. He’ll have a nice little break out here at Gooree now for a couple of weeks. He deserves it after going back-to-back, and he’ll be a really, really nice horse for the owners next preparation.”
Then Mick grabbed Aaron Bullock for a chat: “Well Aaron, he got back today, and he finished off nicely, particularly that last furlong.”
Aaron chimed in: “Yeah, look, he’s a lovely horse, really thought we were going to be a little closer from the 1400m, but look, he’s got a few quirks this horse, you’ve just got to leave him alone. I’ve worked that out with him, I just left him alone, I left him to be comfortable, let him drag me wherever he wanted to be. I just kept two horses in my sights, the leader and Koby (Blue Guitar) back inside me, but on straightening I had plenty of horse, and I knew, if you leave him alone in the first half of the race, he’s got a really good finish, and he’s going to win plenty of races.”
Mick then added in: “I made the comment from an outsider looking in, it was hard to see if he was travelling or not, because he’s got that high head carriage.”
Aaron then stated: “Yeah, just on the outside of horses, like I said, he still does a few things wrong, he’s still learning his trade, but that’s just him. But you’re right, he’s just trying to get away from horses, and carries a bit funny, but he’s still got to listen to me, and he’ll get there. He’s going the right way.”
