Dynamic Kiwi Trainer Brendon Hawtin Jumps Ditch to Australia

With stables at Cambridge & Te Awamutu, New Zealand based trainer Brendon Hawtin is set to give training away in NZ and move to Australia, basing himself at Cranbourne.

An opportunity became available when fellow Kiwis Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young were searching for an assistant to run their Cranbourne stable.

Brendon Hawtin was interviewed about the move by NZ Racing Desk and said:

"The opportunity arose to become an assistant trainer to Trent and Natalie and I will be applying for my trainer's license over there (Victoria), so it is too good to turn down.

"I've been friends with Trent and Natalie for years and they are flying over there, getting bigger and bigger.

“I will be taking over a new barn at Cranbourne to have 30 of their horses in work.

"I've always wanted to have a go in Australia at some stage and I had to grab this with two hands.

"I will finish up at my Cambridge stable on Friday (30 August)."

In New Zealand, Stephen Marsh, is stepping-in to take over Brendon’s Cambridge based stables whilst Brendon’s father Keith will re-apply for his trainer's licence, to take over Brendon’s Te Awamutu stables, which he has been managing for his son.

"It's all worked out well" Brendon said.

"Initially when I get over to Aussie I'll probably end up back in Sydney for a month or so with some of Trent and Natalie's horses."

Brendon Hawtin is a competent and successful Kiwi trainer and made his mark in Sydney earlier this winter with a hit and run mission with Simply Optimistic, who won at Randwick.

Brendon began training in 2006-07 with his dad Keith.

Keith won the New Zealand Trainers Premiership twice when in partnership with Graeme Rogerson.

Brendon branched out on his own account when Keith decided to retire from being a trainer in 2015.

"The highlight so far was getting that win in Sydney with Simply Optimistic," he said.

"I took a gamble and it paid off.

"Now I've got the opportunity to carry on from there in Aussie."

We have known Brendon for 17 years when his father Keith and Dynamic Syndications Managing Director Dean Watt worked closely together at Randwick from 2002 – 2004.

However we couldn’t send Brendon any horses to train simply because the prizemoney is so poor in NZ.

It's uneconomical racing in NZ compared to Australia hence why there are so many Kiwi trainers here.

Now Brendon has decided to jump the ditch and land in Australia to have a crack at the Aussie racetrack riches, our team would be delighted to support the impressive young trainer with our horses, as we know they will be well looked after and trained to perfection.

We expect Brendon will be highly successful as a trainer in Australia.
