The poise of jockey Nash Rawiller, the polish of co-trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent (Jnr), the perfection of race planning of Dynamic Syndications Adam Watt, the racing gods aligning to deliver a soft 6 surface and a magnificent mare with an abundance of class, all combined at Flemington on CUP DAY to produce a dominant win of Race 6 the $200,000 JIM BEAM Stakes Gr3 1400m for mares 4yo and up under set weights and penalties.
TELEPLAY & NASH RAWILLER are poetry in motion as
they glide to victory
What a thrill for her owners and connections !
Teleplay as a 3yo winning the MSS Security Sprint LR on Cup Day in 2018
It was Déjà vu for TELEPLAY and her owners as she repeated her heroism of 12 months earlier, where it was on MELBOURNE CUP Day 2018 she won the MSS Security Sprint 1100m Listed Race.
On Tuesday 5 November 2019, here we were one year later facing the starter third-up for the preparation and for her 13th career start.
She was Top Weight in the event, carrying 1.0kg more than the rest of her 10 peers in the field of 11 runners.
Pre-race nerves subsided as a calmness of reality took hold.
We had the best horse in the race, trained to the minute by wonderful horsemen, our mare was in amazing condition, dappled up and looking splendent.
Then the amazing advantage we held was to place Australia’s Best Rider into the saddle.
In the pre-race huddle as our owners gathered in anticipation hanging on every word, the confidence came to the fore when Dean Watt told our owners “we have Nash Rawiller on today team, we have got the best jockey in Australia on board, the best horse in the race trained by Mick squared (Mick Price & Mick Kent (Jnr)), Nash will give her every opportunity, so it’s just up to her now – enjoy !”
We had asked Nash to have her mid-field and settled in a rhythm, to help her get a strong 1400m. We had anticipated a bit of early speed and the field would string out and she would get her chance in the straight.
However, as the gates crashed back and the field scampered away, the tempo was quicker than expected and they sizzled the first furlong with the race playing into our hands.
Nash quickly summed up the speed and our mare was travelling beautifully so Nash put her to sleep on the fence and Teleplay followed the paint but the early tempo had her at the rear of the field 3 pairs further back than we had thought we would be but we were travelling sweetly.
Passing the 600m at the point of the turn, Nash was in an awkward spot 4 pairs back on the fence.
It was here the masterclass of horsemanship took over. Nash angled Teleplay one off the fence to avoid the heels of Dunbrody Power (Craig Williams) who was not going to take him into the race.
At the 400m it was getting a bit tight as the leader was yielding and there was a traffic jam and we were being held up. Then at the 380m mark, a gap on the fence appeared as riders wanted to shift away from the rail in the straight. Nash sore it unfold and angled back to the fence and pounced.
By the 300m mark Teleplay had established the run on the fence and was starting to wind-up but still 3 lengths off the leaders and in a tight, competitive race was still only in 6th spot.
Then Nash pushed the go button at the clock tower and Teleplay sprinted with an amazing turn of foot. During this time, the favourite La Tigeresa was in full flight down the centre of the track and was aiming at the prize.
By the 100m it was now a two-horse war between La Tigeresa and Teleplay with nothing else a hope.
The crowd roared and owners became grandstand jockeys, shouting, cheering, riding, urging Teleplay home stride for stride with Nash.
Then the balance and strength of Nash Rawiller kicked in and Teleplay lifted again.
At the 50m mark it was all over as Nash had pinched a half-length break and was going strongly.
The tempo continued over the final 50m as Nash rode Teleplay under hands and heels to a widening 1 length win on the post to the racecall of Matt Hill as he excitedly declares “as Teleplay wins on Cup Day again !”
Job Done! It’s fabulous when a long-range plan pays off.
There were no excuses for the others who all had their chances.
A big group of Owners and connections were on hand to welcome TELEPLAY back to the Winners Circle.
After the post-race interviews, the team headed out to the have our photos taken with TELEPLAY before being ushered into the WINNERS ROOM for the Presentation Speeches and drinks whilst we watched the replay of the mighty deed done, over and over again.
It was here that a correction was made to the owners and connections present when Dean Watt said “I would like to correct what I said pre-race about having the best jockey in Australia on board – I should have said “having the best jockey in the World !”
TELEPLAY and NASH lead the field back to scale after their win !
We acknowledge and marvel at the sensational ride of NASH RAWILLER.
We take this opportunity to congratulate and thank MICK PRICE and MICHAEL KENT (Junior) aka “MICK Squared” and their team for the super job they have done with TELEPLAY.
Co-trainer Michael Kent (Jnr) is interviewed with Mick Price TELEPLAY, Nash and Dean return to the Winners Circle
Most Importantly we continue to be amazed at the feats our beautiful and much-loved mare TELEPLAY continues to produce. An $85,000 Inglis Premier Yearling with a magnificent Black-Type Pedigree she is now quadrupled her purchase price with racetrack earnings having backed to date $320,350.
Then of course – how much is a Gr3 and Listed Race Winning, Gr3 placed mare by Written Tycoon from a sensational Black-Type Pedigree?
That’s easy to answer – Plenty !
