Next week Dynamic Syndications will hop on a plane across the ditch in readiness for the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale. The sale has now become recognised as the most successful sale of two-year-olds in Australasia producing 10 Group 1 victories in the last five seasons & 6 Derby winners since 2010.
This year, the leading sale of 2YOs features 407 horses (minus 49 withdrawals) with some wonderfully bred individuals. With Dynamic Syndications fully sold out of their 2012 crop, we are intending to be active at this sale. We have had success in the past buying from this sale and we intend to do the same again.
The New Zealand Ready to Run Sale has produced a Group 1 winner from every Sale for the last 10 years and this year’s catalogue features 407 well-bred two-year-olds. A number of Australia’s leading sires are all represented with seven two-year-olds by Fastnet Rock, six by High Chaparral, five by Encosta De Lago and a further four by Stratum. Magic Albert (3), Choisir (2), Commands (2), Danehill Dancer (1), Exceed and Excel (1), Redoute’s Choice (1) and many more top Australian sires are represented in this years’ draft.
We also see the emergence of the two boom Australian 1st crop sires in Northern Meteor, who is represented by three entries and Sebring who has the one entered.
Dynamic Syndications always make sure we do our due diligence leading up to any sale that we’re active in. We look at a number of key factors such as ability, stud career after racing, likelihood to break down, previous stakes winners on the cross, breeze up time, conformation, commercial appeal among other relevant issues. Over the past months, Dynamic have been carefully studying all aspects of the sale to get an appropriate list of horses so that we can get success for our clients.
Upon looking through all 409 lots, we identified 81 potential individuals that fit the initial criteria of Dynamic Syndications and have the best Australian buyer appeal. The first thing that we considered of the 81 lots was the horses who breezed up (over 200m) in a time of 10.70s. This is approximately 1 length better than the average time recorded (10.85s) over the two days that the breeze ups were conducted. This tells us that they are already showing above average ability yet there is still plenty of room for improvement going forward in their racing career. Out of the candidates that we observed, they all “Breezed Up” with a good action and had an easy flowing economical style without being pushed along to hit the line. We only wanted to be attracted to horses with obvious improvement remaining.
What is often the case in the two year old ready to run sales is the horses who run the fastest times are often “over cooked” and show little improvement going forward. Historical data has shown these two year old rarely make the top grade and in many cases fail to reach the track as they have been pushed too hard too early!
As mentioned previously we are looking for horses with Australian buying appeal that can qualify for the rich bonuses on offer by schemes such as BOBS or Super VOBIS etc. With the prizemoney in Australia continuing to rise, buyers cannot disadvantage themselves buying horses not eligible for these extra $20,000 bonus monies for Saturday races therefore we ruled horses out who did not qualify for these.
At this stage, we had now narrowed down our numbers from the original 81 lots to just 25. We now look at each horse’s individual pedigree and analyse it carefully.
To determine pedigrees that are appropriate, we look at a number of factors using a ranking system that focuses on genetic capabilities and the success of the cross (Sire over the Broodmare Sire line). We are particularly committed to these tools as part of our selection model and it has repeatedly proven to be a sound source of racetrack success. Of the 25 remain lots, 20 of these found themselves in the “A” range with five others falling into the B-F grades. Out of these 20 we found that seven rated an “A+++” which is the highest possible rating, four rated “A++”, another four rated an “A+” while the final five were rated as “A”.
It continues to support / prove the selection model’s statistic merits. With 25 qualified lots, 20 were A grade ratings (80%), whilst 5 horses that rated B to F supplied (20%) of the lots. Yet A grade was only represented by 29% of the total catalogued lots whilst 71% was catalogued as B to F grade.
So what this means is that before individual inspections, x-rays and check ups, we have identified the 20 best candidates with Australian Buyer Appeal. This is based on three major categories including bonus race eligibilities, proven commercial stallions and pedigree ratings. The next step of our process will be to head over to New Zealand and individual inspect the lots. Among the 20 remaining horses, there are 12 leading sire including BERNADINI, CASINO PRINCE, CHARGE FORWARD, ENCOSTA DE LAGO, EXCEED AND EXCEL, FASTNET ROCK, FLYING SPUR, MAGIC ALBERT, MOSSMAN, NORTHERN METEOR, STRATUM and TESTA ROSSA.
Make sure you check the website over the coming days as we will keep you updated as we head over to the sales to inspect the lots. Dynamic are excited to come back with some quality racehorses and we hope that you will be able to come along for the ride.
