Dynamic Syndications problem child SPECIFIC CHOICE has a huge amount of talent but his brilliance was being matched by bad luck and a wandering mind causing a lack of focus on raceday’s.
Despite having a record of 8 starts, 2 wins, 2 seconds, 1 third and over $255,000 in earnings, both bad luck in races and his own poor manners had been the main reasons behind this record not being significantly better.
In his early days, connections were confident that the big son of Lonhro was a Stakes horse in the making however he would loose focus in races, especially if fillies were about.
SPECIFIC CHOICE takes his first steps of redemption in race 6 at Randwick on Saturday over 1400m.
Not having started since back on the 30 November (7 weeks), that day he hit the front early in the straight but the jockey reported the horse lost interest and focus and seemed to want to wait for the others to catch up. So adding this to a serious of other incidents, the immediate decision was made to geld the horse.
Specific Choice continued in the stables since that date and now appears to be far more tractable and keener on his trackwork.
He resumes at Royal Randwick over 1400m despite not having a run in 7 weeks but has trialled once. It would have been preferred to run in a 1200m event but the racing calendar didn’t allow that option.
Whilst gelding operations doesn’t mean things will change overnight, we do expect to see a more focused and committed racehorse over this and his next few assignments. We wish our owners, our trainer Chris Waller and jockey Hugh Bowman the best of luck in what appears a tough race on paper.
