The
Bendigo standalone meeting again proved a goldmine for
popular young Mornington trainer MATT LAURIE after
RIDDLE ME THAT claimed Saturday’s $150,000 feature in the
Listed Bendigo Guineas (1400m).
MATT LAURIE
Prepared by
Dynamic Trainer MATT LAURIE, Riddle Me That has been working consistently through his grades and came into this Black Type assignment fit and ready to fire at his third run back from a spell.
RIDDLE ME THAT
A previous start runner-up at Fleming to expensive Snitzel colt Spend,
Riddle Me That was able to turn the tables on that horse, when defeating Score and Zousonic with Spend finishing in fourth.
It was 12 months ago
Matt Laurie trained Prince Of Sussex to win the
Bendigo VOBIS Gold Rush at the corresponding meeting before going on to claim the inaugural
VOBIS Showdown at Caulfield four weeks later, and then was sold to Hong Kong.
While Matt believes
Riddle Me That may not be in the class of
Prince Of Sussex, he certainly thinks the gelding can continue on an upward spiral after landing his fourth win in Saturday’s Bendigo Guineas.
Winning rider
Daniel Stackhouse said
Riddle Me That had been working impressively this time in, which left him confident of a win despite the tricky draw.
“He’s been doing everything right this time in, he’s been relaxing,” Stackhouse said.
“The race didn’t work out perfectly for us but he relaxed nicely and was able to get balanced and work through his gears.
"I was always confident turning in that we were going to pick them up because he does try so hard.
“He toughed it out and he keeps improving every time he steps out.” Stackhouse added.
Riddle Me That has the overall record of four wins and four placings from 10 starts with prizemoney in excess of $184,000.
Trainer Matt Laurie said “I think this horse can continue to improve; he has done that every preparation.
“He is a smart horse and he has come back really well this preparation,” Matt Laurie said.
“We didn’t draw so well last start but he ran particularly well at Flemington and obviously we had another wide draw today which I was a little bit disappointed about.
“But it was a great ride from Daniel and it is good to see him get a good win.
“Daniel slotted him in perfectly behind the right horse. He is a tough horse and he has got that galloping style where he really gets his nose out and that was enough to get the job done today.
“I will have to look through the calendar and talk to the owners about what we do next.
“Obviously everything has been thrown into disarray but certainly this was a target and it is good to get it done.”
DEEP FIELD - Super Young Sire
Riddle Me That is the fourth stakes-winner for Newgate Farm’s boom young sire DEEP FIELD, who is the Leading Sire of both the Australian three-year-old winners this season as well as being the Leading Second crop sire by winners.
Deep Field has been super popular with breeders and covered 256 mares last spring at a fee of $44,000.
Dynamic Syndications purchased a beautiful filly by DEEP FIELD at the Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale this year.
As an investment they don’t come better. Our filly would be arguably the “Best” filly bred by the DEEP FIELD in this crop.
Apart from being a sensational looking individual, that was 100% clean on confirmation and x-rays, it’s the huge Black-Type, highly commercial female pedigree that she has which will ensure excellent residual value upon racetrack retirement.
OUR FILLY is from ZARINIA (IRE) an unraced mare bred by the Aga Khan, she has proven to be an astonishingly successful broodmare.
At stud she has produced 6 foals to race - 5 winners, plus an unraced daughter that has produced a Gr2 Winner.
Our filly is a: 1/2 Sister to Champion South African racemare - IGUGU
* Horse of the Year in South Africa in 2010-11.

Our filly is a: 1/2 Sister to the Dam of Gr2 Winner TARKA (3 wins)
Our filly has been sent to leading trainers CIARON MAHER & DAVID EUSTACE to be trained and the boys have trained 20 Stakes Winners this season and also they have won twenty-two (22) 2yo races to date so we know she will be given every opportunity to shine.
CIARON MAHER and DAVID EUSTACE
Imagine on this pedigree if she was able to earn black-type herself what she would be worth in the broodmare barn to commercial breeders.
Especially since she is totally free of Danehill bloodlines, she would be able to be mated genetically to any stallion at stud here in Australia.
