TOMATIN
(Smart Missile x Highland Daughter (IRE)) suggests the galloper has a better than average upside to his racing career when he stormed home from the rear to claim Race 3 on the programme on Sunday at Mudgee Race Course.
Recently transferred to the care of leading country trainer
Brett Cavanough at Scone
,
TOMATIN
is best described as a
“Handful”
with a
boisterous temperament
. However even though he doesn’t help himself in the manners department, he has above average ability and looks capable of going through his classes.
On debut, the horse was taken up the line to Port Macquarie for a maiden over 1108m and on the day, he may have won the battle over his rider. The horse raced deep without cover and didn’t get asked to extend, to finish over 5 lengths from the winner.
A disappointing run on paper however a vital run for both fitness and education.
Here at Mudgee with 3 weeks between runs, up 300m in trip and with a stronger horseman aboard, we believed he was well placed in a tough bush maiden.
With a $1.40 favourite in the race and a big field, all other runners were well over the odds and our team at
Dynamic believed TOMATIN was a genuine chance of rolling this $1.40 favourite
who we considered was suspect at the weights and distance and then, we considered we were an genuine each way hope as our ratings had us marked as a $7 chance and early market betting opened at $9.00.
We couldn’t believe our eyes when the horse kept blowing in the market.
Trainer Brett Cavanough doing the strapping himself
He was certainly too any horse person, the pick of the yard and a
big clue
was that trainer
Brett Cavanough himself was the strapper
.
Yet our horse
TOMATIN
kept blowing at every call. Officially he blew from $16 to $21 however $28 was freely available before they jumped and the NSW TAB paid
$26.90 / $5.20.
TOMATIN won Race 3 - the Mudgee Florist Maiden Handicap over 1400m carrying 56.5kgs and defeated Rose Of War by 0.15 length with Jungle Melody beaten 1.73 lengths into third whilst the $1.40 favourite Big Bad Bruce was easily beaten when 2.52 lengths back in fourth.
They recorded 1.25.53 for the trip on a Good 3 surface.
The plan was to be positive if possible and be up in the first four however when pilot Jake Hull was legged aboard, Brett Cavanough said
“just give him the best ride you can, I think he goes alright.”
The tactic to go forward went out the door after 100m, when they went hard up front and
TOMATIN
was beaten for early speed. So Jake took control and got
TOMATIN
to settle and balance up and as a result, he got well back, some 8 lengths off the leaders by the 1000m mark.
Jake didn’t bustle
TOMATIN
as he had the back of the favourite in the run. At the 500m we were hugging the fence and as those in front panned wide to negotiate the home turn,
TOMATIN
cuddled the rail and cut the corner in a text book ride, then angled out 5 to 6 deep to get to the outside of the favourite.
The favourite had hit the front at the 200m and spotting this leader 3 lengths at the 200m,
TOMATIN
swooped and hit the front at the 75m mark however the favourite as expected, was weak and started to lay out, forcing us wider on the track. Whilst this was happening the runner-up was getting a dream passage along the inside and had momentum up and a 2.5kgs pull in the weights and now had hit the front.
Trainer "CAV" cheers home another winner !
A tough Win !
At the 50m
TOMATIN
had shaken off the favourite but now had to put in a second effort to reel in the eventual runner-up Rose Of War which he did in the last few strides to claim victory.
Return to scale a Winner !
Jake reports to Brett
Jake Hull talks to co-owner Ian Middleton post race
Jake Hull reported he was
“very green”
and
“didn’t know much”
and
“he has good ability and can go through his grades.”
He said the horse was
“his own worst enemy”
but when he works out what he is doing, he has a
serious motor
.
We have plenty of options now to consider but we won’t be in any rush. Horse husbandry and temperament are the keys. We will look to place him to advantage over 1400m to 1600m in the coming races and pick up a few more
BOBS Bonuses
whilst we can, as we did here when earning $17,200 for this win.
A big thank you goes to trainer (& Strapper)
Brett Cavanough
who has had to work hard to get the confidence of TOMATIN which he has now achieved. Also acknowledgement to
Jake Hull
with his 11 out of 10 ride.
Congratulations goes to the Dynamic Team of
