The Golden Rose Stakes is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 race for three-year-olds, run at set weights, over 1,400 metres at Rosehill.
Previously run in late August or early September, the race now runs on the fourth Saturday in September.
Total prizemoney for the race is
$1 million
.
Dynamic Syndications unbeated 3yo YAO DASH will accept for the GOLDEN ROSE
The
GOLDEN ROSE
came into existence in 2003 after the Sydney Turf Club altered the conditions of a race that had been established in 1978 known as the
PETER PAN Stakes
– a Group 2 for three-year-olds at set weights over 1500m.
With the Golden Slipper continuing to rise in prominence, the then STC committee changed the name as a way of connecting the 2yo’s lured to the riches of Golden Slipper the previous autumn, to follow on into the spring carnival as newly turned 3yo’s.
HISTORY
PETER PAN
Peter Pan
the horse after which the race was first named, competed in the late 1920s and 1930s around the time of legendary Phar Lap.
As such he was often overshadowed by the other champion.
However, Peter Pan can claim championship status in his own right.
Peter Pan was owned and bred by Rodney Dangar. Frank McGrath senior took over his training and Jim Pike was a regular rider. Over his racing career,
Peter Pan had
39
starts with
23
wins,
6
seconds and
1
third
.
These wins were over a variety of stakes level and weight-for-age races.
Peter Pan won the Melbourne Cup (twice) 1932, 1934, AJC Derby in 1932, the McKinnon Stakes (twice), AJC St Leger, AJC Plate, All Aged Stakes, Hill Stakes (twice), Craven Plate and the Rawson Stakes (now known as the Ranvet Stakes).
One of his greatest successes was in the Melbourne Cup which he won first in 1932 and then again in 1934. This was the first double in the Melbourne Cup since inaugural winner Archer had won the first race and second race in 1861 and 1862.
Peter Pan had his final race in 1936 and was retired to stud where he successfully sired Precept (Victorian Derby) and Peter (runner-up Melbourne Cup 1944).
Peter Pan’s stud career was cut short after an injury required him to be euthanised in 1941.
