Dynamic 4yo mare ZOU DE MOON (Zoustar x Moon De French) was turned out in magnificent order first-up from a spell by our
Newcastle based trainer JASON DEAMER, and jet pilot
Ashley Morgan then gave our mare a
“pearler” of a ride to record a dominant
2.56 lengths win in the
2022 Maclean Bowling Club MACLEAN CUP the
$35,000 feature race on the final day of the
2022 Grafton Cup Carnival.

Finding a rare Good 4 surface,
ZOU DE MOON was sent to the barriers a
$3.50 favourite and gave nothing else a chance with an awesome display of power and speed over the 1400m trip.
ZOU DE MOON defeated BARGANNON ($4.2) by 2.56 lengths with BECKFORD ($15) a further 0.22 length away in third spot.
ZOU DE MOON - An Easy Winner of the Maclean Cup
Drawing awkwardly in
barrier 9 of 12 runners, it was our intention to be positive and try and cross the field and settle just on the pace and try and get in to find some cover behind the leader.
The script turned out perfectly in a race that was run at a fast tempo.
As the gates crashed back,
ZOU DE MOON was quickly into stride, however as we anticipated, the speed was on early, and a after 150m we were sharing the lead but caught wide, out 5 deep without cover. There was no need to panic as over the next 100m
DOLLSON ($15) took off and
FORTYFIVE PARKLANE ($8) pushed up with it to hold the fence.
This allowed Ash Morgan to steer
ZOU DE MOON across to sit on her own in third spot, tracking the two leaders that were setting up a quick tempo as the field strung out over a sixteen lengths by the time they thundered past the 1000m marker.
Passing the 800m post DOLLSON and FORTYFIVE PARKLANE were eyeballing each other which was fabulous for
ZOU DE MOON as Ash kept our mare in a balanced rhythm as the leading pair kept each other honest.
Passing the 600m, FORTYFIVE PARKLANE had drawn a length in front of DOLLSON whilst Ash Morgan hadn’t pent a penny when tracking the leader one off the fence and a length in front of the balance of the field, as the leaders started their swing into the home turn.
As they rounded into the top of the straight,
ZOU DE MOON was angled out off the heels of the leaders and Ash allowed our mare a little rein and she moved up stylishly in the centre of the track as they passed the 400m pole.
300m
At the 300m Ash pushed the
“go-button” and the
Dynamic Duo sprinted away.
200m
The race was over at the 200m marker as those chasing had no answer to the power and speed
ZOU DE MOON exploded away with.
100m
Such was the dominance, Ash allowed
ZOU DE MOON to coast to the post over the last 50m yet the margin was still 2.56 lengths on the line despite those fighting out the minors being hard at work.
25m
ZOU DE MOON stopped the clock at a slick
1:23.66 for the 1400m trip despite being eased down on a warn, winter surface.

Trainer JASON DEAMER had been given the task of having
ZOU DE MOON ready for this first up assignment in a race that we believed she would be perfectly suited for her resumption race start.
Jason had trialled
ZOU DE MOON twice with Ash Morgan in the saddle. First-up she had a pipe opener when an easy third placing over 1000m at Muswellbrook and then, Ash rode her again at her second trial at Wyong over 1200m which she won with ease.
ZOU DE MOON had a nice first-up record prior to this with 3 starts first-up for 2 wins. It’s now 4 starts for 3 wins.
Overall ZOU DE MOON has a career record of 11 starts: 4 Wins, 2 Seconds, 1 Fourth and $92,245.
ZOU DE MOON has taken a little time to mature but she is a much bigger and stronger mare this time through and the daughter of
Moon De French, a Group 1 placed mare over 1700m certainly looks to have a promising preparation ahead of her.
